going fully independent is hard. You're competing against anybody on craigslist which includes a million teenagers who figured out how to run antivirus and consider $20 a payday. some weeks you'll get nothing, and you may not be getting enough to live off for quite a while.
If you want to go independent start doing it after hours and on weekends. Start building up clients and people who trust you, get some business cards printed, and in situations like the one you described you can just say 'I do a some repair work on the side, here's my card' and it's all legit.
When I was a sysadmin I was picking up about ~6 hours a week of private work without really trying. It would still be hard to leverage that into a living.
