a few years ago when i was 23 i went out n saw that movie they made of the book in theatre..........it left out SO MUCH of the details/plot/characters from the book. really dissapointed. but at least to see the special effects and how the movie portrayed the training room and stuff was badass.
Not even kidding
>>682198445
Long Goodbye is only one I've read but I really need to read the fucking rest.
the movie was surprisingly faithful to this. well. maybe not surprising.
the cohen brothers.
but it's an awesome read.
I just loved imagining the world Zarathustra lives in.
Metro 2033 was also a wonderful book, I was fully immersed at some points.
Artjom's state of mind before the nazi execution was really fucked.
The Cemetery in Prague was also something a history nerd like me loves.
The Forever War
Incredible book, will always love.
Also House of the Scorpion, god tier book, have read a thousand times, will continue to read.
>>682195314
The first four Dune books are utterly amazing and form an awe-inspiring story-arc. The next couple before Hebert died...eeeeeh...and the sequels and prequels from his son and that Scientologist dude are fucking garbage.

ive read many sci-fi books before and since. but nothing really compares.
the fact it goes into so much detail about the more social effects of time dilation really makes you question how much you matter as an individual in the grand scheme of things
>>682202480
I've heard that it's good but haven't heard of content, what's it about?
>>682204760

Book was interesting but meh. I had to read it for a college class.
>>682207648

It's not the best I've ever read but it's extremely underrated, especially since it's Asimov.
>>682195314
One of my all-time favourites.
Strangely never got in to the rest of the series. The movie needs to be redone. Hollywood reboots all sorts of nonsense, but now we have the tech to make a really good Dune (follow the fucking book, don't try & be clever) the project never gets off the ground.
Was a reasonable min-series a few years back.
>>682206483
I have that edition. Good book.
List of a couple:
Focault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco

A Song of Ice and Fire.
Yes, it's a series, but isn't it arbitrary to consider series' as different books, but not chapters?
>>682208323
I hear there was a sequel recently released, will read soon.
Dune (fuck the prequels)
Starship Troopers (fuck the movie)
Mote in God's Eye
Snow Crash
A Bridge of Birds
World War Z (fuck that movie too)
A Brief History of Almost Everything (Bryson is hilarious, greatest coffee table book ever written)
Passage at Arms (Cook writes amazing gritty fantasy, but this is one of the greatest military SF novels ever written)
Adiamante
>>682208458
It gets a lot of hate too. Some people criticize it for being too simple or incoherent when thematically it's anything but, and aesthetic simplicity is the point. In fact a lot of criticism against Vonnegut can be excused with "that's the point".
>>682204760
Wish he'd never started thinking of it as a Series. Speaker wasn't total shit, but after that... total fucking cash cow with no regard for consistency, clarity, message...
And how is it that no one here's posted Old Man's War?
he's gotten repetitive the past few books but the first ten or so robicheaux novels? some of the best genre fiction i've ever read.

>Long Earth Series
I guess I'll genuinely contribute to the thread now, then...
I've read a lot of good books in my short time. According to this thread, most of them most certainly haven't been forgotten, so I'll just say it: will everyone hate me if I tell them that I read this book over 170 times in the same year that I first read it, because I felt like I missed something after each read (also because it's -that- book, and it's already probably been beaten to death and back by pop-culture references)?
I also maybe know the entire book by heart since then. Even the book inside the book.

Another one- short story turned series, fairly decent, kept me reading all the way through.
As a book, goes by "Silo", but the short stories go by "Wool", "Shift" and "Dust".

litfags of b, please help. the greatest book I ever read was about these spheres that formed when energy was applied. they basically turned into a silvery ball and were foever stable with no energy able to enter or leave the sphere. no one was really clear on what happened inside, but to the outside world whatever it was just stopped- so enemy soldier coming at you with a gun? sphere him. jet plane with bombs? more energy, sphere it. whole army? bigger sphere.
that's the first half.
I still to this fucking day remember the damy cover- it's a giant fucking tree growing out of a space plane.
I've asked on lit, I've looked at bookstores and libraries for years. I've read every book I can torrent with time in the title (no idea if that' relevant).

Well, I'm glad to tell you that I don't have either of those in terms of a disorder. Being a young teen when I was, it wasn't often that you'd find a book on the library shelf that had several different plots/stories going on at the same time, some even told in a non-linear fashion. Even then, none told so well.
You'd probably find Twilight instead. Nineteen Eight-Four, or Twilight?

The very worst postmodern tripe ever to be published and inexplicably become famous. Well, I guess it's not inexplicable given the state of literature these days. Do yourself a favour and read an author who doesn't just write down the first thing that comes to his sciolistic mind. It also helps if said author has submitted to an editor that actually cuts out the unnecessary detritus that inevitably accumulates in a novel. The editors of Infinite Jest missed about 890 pages that should have been trimmed.

I've read Lolita and nothing else by him, but I loved Lolita to death. What should I read next?

The best -story- I've ever read is King's Black Tower series.
The best single book is King's "Eyes of the Dragon"
Neither are his usual horror fare, which makes them quite a bit better in my opinion.

I love Neil Gaimen but he has the shittiest ending I have ever read. Everything (outside of the Sandman) is just so anti-climactic.

I agree, Nabokov's prose is so beautiful and despite how you may feel towards Lolita, it's an incredible book.
What other books have you read by him, anon? I just got Ada a few days ago and I'm eager to read it

I must second this, with a very close second being Snow Crash. Or maybe the other way around. Man, choosing between those two is hard.
