What's the formula for gpm from a smooth tip?
>>
>>682144028
Badge is at work, also, I'm not that stupid. And to answer "Is it worth it": Absolutely. Sure, it is a high risk job, but we risk a lot to save a lot. I love my job, but I'm not an adrenaline junkie that would put my life or my brother's life in danger just for kicks.
>>
>>682143838
From what I've seen on videos there's a lot of fucking smoke and fire coming from rooftops. I though all this new age insulation was fire proof,or fire resistant. Am I just getting taken for a ride at Lowe's when I buy it? Does any of that stuff actually help?
>>
>>682144265
Q = the square root of P times K is the textbook equation, where Q = flow rate in GPMs, P = velocity pressure in psi, and k = flow factor of the device. Granted, that is just one equation, and there are a few others, such as the pitot formula.
>>
>>682144722
The problem is with a lot of the regulations nowadays is that they are not very easily enforced. Lobbying firms backed by huge manufacturers toss money at politicians like it's Christmas, and it sways them towards lenient regulations. Often, the "certified fireproof" items are made exactly the same way as normal items, until they reach the end of the line and receive a special sticker and are sent to a different place. The smoke is created by a lot of different factors.
>>
>>6821438338
you just too dumb or lazy to get an actual job? Or both?
>>
>>682144722
The way that modern items are manufactured contribute to the type of smoke that exists now, full of toxic gases, such as hydrogen sulfide, hydrogen cyanide, and a number of others. All of the synthetics used in the manufacture of such products contribute to how dark and toxic the fire is. The products of combustion are also more flammable. In addition, houses are much less vented than in the past, in the way that they are essentially airtight to save money on heat and cooling. They also have more open floorplans, which spread smoke and fire much more quickly than "legacy" or traditional construction would.
>>
>>682145292
Firefighting is an extremely difficult job, both physically and mentally. We need to be able to make the best possible judgements in seconds. Stupid firefighters don't last very long.
>>
>>682143838
do you like riding on the wave of " firemen are all heros" sentiment even when you don't qualify as a hero.
What I mean is , do you feel alright riding other more heroic colleagues glory?
>>
>>682145904
"Heroism" is a very loose term. In the fire service, a "hero" is a firefighter just like any other, that happened to be in the right place at the right time. Every firefighter is willing to run into harm's way, and put themselves at risk, in the hopes of saving someone or their property. Also, it generally makes firefighters uncomfortable being called a "hero" because we don't consider ourselves "heroes". We're just ordinary people doing the job we love.
>>
>>682145693
Wow. You literally made me Laugh Out Loud. I'm a med students, Ive met tons of firefighters and all of them are dumb as shit. Muh Hero worship, blah blah blah. The only ones that I semi fact or the paramedics.

>>
>>682146627
>>682146627
Pretty much true though. The guys I'm up against are fucking stupid meatheads...and the firemen test are ridiculously easy. Made me think less of the job.

Example question: you're going north on Mullberry, and then take a left on Johnson which follows around where you go right at Peak Street. What direction are you headed.

Looked around like are you fucking kidding me?

on that note, did u hear of the girl firefighter who killed herself because she was being called a slut by her fellow firemen?
>>
>>682147316
It depends on where you are. If you are in a rural area where any bumbling pile of chromosomes piece of trailer trash can waltz into the tin shed with a 1940 Hahn engine with three wheels and ride the piece with no training, the effect isn't really there. Otherwise, it can be very helpful. It's worked out well for me.
>>
>>682147372
I know that there are some guys that do. I try not to. I don't want to end up in the hot seat with my superiors or get sued for harassment or some shit.
>>
>>682147435
This is bullshit, have you ever seen a cat skeleton in a tree? Those furry fucks will come down when they get hungry.
>>
>>682143838
Hey OP, Wildland guy here. Ever do interface work alongside our guys? One time we did a small rail fire, guy was welding and lit up some brush and it started spreading. The municipal guys where kind enough to share water with us to fill up our wajax bags. It was a fun day.
>>
>>682147638
It depends on where the fire is. Generally legacy houses are the easiest to extinguish, but fire can get into void spaces and spread through the whole house, and we have to chase it down.
>>
>>682147836
No, but I have seen cat skeletons in washing machines, drainage pipes, ventilation systems, and inside walls.
>>
>>682146400
Firefighters as a group are exposed to more risk than the military and many police, since most firefighters physically confront fire while most military fags don't personally do combat.

The "hero" shit is spouted by ignorant plebs, but firefighters merit RESPECT for confronting some nasty shit including HazMat fires. They can get PTS, and one good case of smoke inhalation can fuck your shit up. Smoke ain't generic so burning toxic material can do damage not just on initial exposure but over time.

I'm not a firefighter, just aware of what they do since I was a milfag Safety puke.
>>

>>
>>682147655
Yeah. That pissed me off to no end. I have worked with some female firefighters that far outclassed most of the male firefighters. I hate that some of my fellow firefighters allow outdated establishment bullshit cloud their judgment and cause them to drive their fellow firefighters to such extreme measures. It saddens me to see firefighters who are capable and competent shit on because they are different.

Who gives a fuck if you're a firefighter. I'm a firefighter, too but I don't go begging for attention online like we are heroes. I just got back from a fire where 4 commercial structures were burnt to the ground. They were all standing when we got there. We are not heroes. We are humans with hoses that spray water.

What kind of department are you looking into? Are you looking more into firefighting or EMS? Some departments, such as LA County, require fire science degrees, and others don't. I would recommend going for NREMT Paramedic when you are ready, and a fire science degree can definitely make you look better to a department.

I support women being in the profession, if they can make the cut. If they need special assistance to get through, then they shouldn't be a firefighter. Period. Men fail the tests and don't get help with it. Why should they? Hoses don't get lighter because of what's between your legs.

>>
>>682147117
I would use a water can. It sounds like your trouser hose is dangerously dry and needs to get cooled down.
>>
Wildlandfag again. I appreciate the modesty in this thread. The whole hero thing, it doesn't really apply to us in most circumstances. I mean, if you wear a hardhat at work, chances are you end up in equally dangerous situations as we do.

I remember these higher ups talking about some guy that pulled someone away from, iirc, a fire extinguisher that went off and got breathed in a bit. He ended up on the news and said something to the effect of "yeah, I feel like a hero. But it's just what we do". Everyone in the room just shook there heads, cringe/raging internally.

You do gain points on the civil service test for being a veteran, and you are required by law to have a better chance of getting hired. If you have related experience, and you work to get a degree (especially fire science), you will have a good chance of getting hired.

Either way it doesn't matter. If you deal with that shit you're not a "Strong independent woman" you're exactly what they said you were. A stupid worthless slut. As a man I would NEVER EVER want a female firefighter attempting to save my life. Just like how I would NEVER EVER go to combat alongside a woman or want female cops on duty as police officers.

There was a fireman from a department near my old volunteer company that got hit by some glass because he didn't clear out when he was warned that master stream ops were being initiated. He got on the front page of the newspaper, and called himself a hero at least six times during the interview. Those guys give us all a bad name. And in response to your earlier question, I run on a midtown engine company, so we don't border any "wild lands".

>>
>>682150933
Officially, we have a PT test every quarter where we have to run three miles in twenty minutes or less, perform 80 or more situps in two minutes, 50 or more pushups in a minute, and at least twenty pullups. Unofficially, if you can't do the job, you will find yourself out of the firehouse. Simple as that.
>>
>>682150978
True in part. The standards are changing almost as much as the qualified applicants.

Coincidence?

Hint: the standards are being lowered and lowered. Ref:- FDNY recruit who couldn't pass the PT test. Graduated. Lasted a week in the field. SHE was 'qualified.'

So it's kind of tough to tell. You can be 'qualified' on any test if you affirmative action the standards low enough

People don't understand how different male and female brains are as well the drastic differences under stressful situations. Men control it by acting out "like a frat boy" or being ultra serious. It was three residentials, side by side. The fire started in the middle house in the dead of night. By the end of it, All three were totally lost, others damaged, and there was a brush fire out of it (the winds were insane that night, and drove the fire wildly out of control). When all was said and done, three kids died in that fire, as well as the parents of two of them. There was also a car fire that we had, a minivan full of a soccer mom and six kids going to practice. That shit will mess with you.

>>
>>682153926
Sprinkler laws are generally defeated in legislative bodies because big corporations have too much money to throw around. Also, sprinklers are only effective at delaying fires. It cools down gases to prevent flashover, they are not made to extinguish fires, and they don't work well for extinguishing fires. Also, we catch quite a few fires, but we also work vehicle accidents, medical runs, just about anything you can think of. The fire service has shifted to an "all-hazards" approach, so we do pretty much anything you can think of. So we stay pretty busy. Also, we work as an insurance policy. We seem unnecessary until it is your house in flames with your kids trapped in a closet.

2. how many died because u've been a fag and did not walk in like a boss?
>>
>>682153926
in my country (not OP) it's still the firefighters inspecting the sprinklers and doing enforcement. and they do a shit job because there's not nearly enough of them to do that and fight fire.
>>
>>682154226
Ok.. So justify getting paid going to 50% false alarms, 40% old people falling down, and 10% fires.

You literally work for 1 hour in a 24 hour shift. Firefighters are useless.

Every job is dangerous. Life is dangerous.
>>
>>682154367
Tyco is a huge corporation, sprinkler fitters like to drink the koolaid.
>>
>>682154400
not mutually exclusive
>>
>>682154542
Our command structure surveys conditions and makes commands. We don't go into houses where the people inside are obviously dead (the roof is collapsing, etc.). And too estimate how many people we have saved (because no firefighter works alone) is hard, as we rarely get to hear about patients after we help them.
>>
>>682154595
You sound like a cop.
>>
>>682154367
Sprinklers are very good at extinguishing fires. They dump gallons of water in seconds. Any medical call is handled by Paramedics. Firefighters stand by and help lift patients.

Firefighters are just there so people feel safe.
>>
>>682154766
Agreed?
>>
>>682154595
Life is dangerous. That is why firefighters still exist. We work to get people out of dangerous places. We cut meat processors out of machines. We pull chimney sweeps out of brick walls. We treat cops that get shot. We help truck drivers that have been in accidents. Our job, our purpose is to protect other people from the dangerous of life, by putting ourselves in that situation with them.

I'm a Boston firefighter
>>
>>682155212
Sarcasm is hard to type isn't it?
>>
>>682155095
Firefighters, in many areas, are EMTs/Paramedics, and often arrive before an ambulance does. Also, sprinklers often don't flow as well as they should. Also, what happens if there is a fire and the sprinkler doesn't work?
>>
how big a problem is petty arson like trash, cars, etc burning? ever had a situation where you were at a call like that or hoax or something and it effected responding to a major emergency?
>>
>>682155416
Yes it is I'm struggling over here from all this hard work.
>>
Is this video actually how firefighting is? Or is it less gay?

Then you of all people should know that living in Boston is ass and the firefighters are called often as fuck. People being dicks and abusing your job is not something that works as an argument. nice b8 tho
>>
>>682155477
It can be a pretty major problem in some areas, such as Detroit and the like. It has impeded my department in the past.

Ever started a fire to be the first hero to piss it off?

Whelp guys, OP's gotta go. Goodbye, and thanks for all the fish.

That activity is usually reserved for volunteers.

Is it true firemen used to put out fires?

I also know how easy our job is. I get paid 100k a year to hang out with my boys.

We think we're so fucking important. We're not. We aren't heroes.

Fuck the tax payers.
>>
>>682155854
Some structure fires are easy, some are best described as losing all your senses except touch/feel.
>>
>>682156990
And fuck the city council for not giving me my step raise.
>>
ever responded to a murder?
>>
>>682143838
my city uses a volunteer fire department
because the firemen are on call with in 5 minutes of the station and not on duty at the station
response time is ~12 minutes
from what I've read a house can be entirely consumed in <9 minutes
is that true?
what can I do to control the flame to buy that extra 3 minutes of response time?
>>
>>682158231
Anything over 5 min in a municipal setting is shit. Probably why your home insurance is higher than the equivalent with a paid department.
>>
>>682158231
even if they are at your house within 12 min they would need some minutes anyway for orientation, searching for living humans, unrolling the hoses, bla bla...lets say the first water will flow after 20 min in your case.
>>
>>682158829
If they can't pull a preconnect and be in the door of a single story with a positive pressure vent within five minutes they are shit.
>>
>>682156556

>>
>>682156556
what is the red thing? a beer can opener?
>>
>>682158829
>>682158771
so what, short of installing a sprinkler system, can I do to slow the fire giving the firefighters a chance of saving my house?
>>
>>682158231
Go to home depo and get a ABC rated dry chem extinguisher. If it's smaller than a bonfire use it. If not close the door. Bonus points for the window as well. Than gtfo and tell the companies when they get there what room
>>
>>682158231

ok then 17min of fear for our anon.
i would recommend him a water or foam spraying system with pyrotechnical trigger and prosphorous powder ignition based on a magnesium chip reservoir system with thermite flame busting container. adding a hydrogen-oxygen (2:1) gas system for instant combusting flame blasting should keep u safe until the firefighters are awake and into their pink socks.

>>

>>
>>682160298
Here's the deal, everything in your house is just stuff that can be replaced. Do you want a someone to tell you that you need to get a fire extinguisher/garden hose and risk your life to try and put it out yourself? That's like a surgeon telling you it's okay to go ahead and make the first incision for your surgery while you're in the waiting room.
>>
>>682148542
>runs into burning collapsing building to help some random person he's never met

>>
>>682161487
Our "negotiating team" has struck out for 3 years straight, except for a 3% stipend and we got them to drop our fit for duty testing to once a year.
>>
>>682161878
I prefer the rookie. His hands are pretty soft after he does the dishes.
>>
>>682162185
Drug testing?

We technically have a once a year fit for duty thing in our contract but is literally never enforced
>>
>>682161878
Lol.. Wait what?

Fucking gross to jerk off at the firehouse
>>
>>682162380
We are on random drug testing but it's city wide, usually the street or sanitation dept get reamed. The last few times a firefighter got picked for it he was off duty anyways. The fit for duty test is basically a nerfed cpat
>>
>>682162942
what kind of drugs do you firefighters have to test regularly? sounds like a lazy job man...
>>
>>682162942
If our union ever gives into drug testing I'll quit
>>
>>682163695
Your city will bargain for it eventually, get ready.
>>
>>682162503
Why gross? The rookie cleans the showers every morning.
>>
>>682164190
Probably not. We don't have a drug problem. And our city is too cheap to spend the money on testing when it isn't an issue.

LA County Firefighter Paramedic here. High school with a 100K paycheck! Can't wait to retire at 55 with over 90% pay on taxpayers backs.
>>
>>682165250
If it's not a problem you guys should trade it for something good. When we bargained and gave them drug testing we got 4% in between steps instead of 2.5%. It let the guys that promote top out their grade faster
>>
>>682143838
nothing to ask. just wanted to say you guys deserve to be paid more. keep on being awesome.

>>
>>682148463
I second this. 8 year Firefighter/Paramedic myself. Do I love my job? Most days. Do I go around being all proud and shit telling people I'm a fireman on my days off? Not anymore and not unless they ask. You must be new. That is like the first 3-5 years phase. Anyone who is still vocal as can be about what they do without being asked after that point is a fucking Ricky rescue tool and you will get someone hurt or killed on a scene with your gun-ho bullshit. I actually told people to quit getting me the firefighter shirts and bullshit after a few birthdays and Christmases because I only wear it for shirts I don't care if I ruin working around the house, not in public. I want as few people knowing what I do when out of uniform as possible, except the firefighter license plates to get out of most police encounters :) Am I a hero? Maybe to some. I just think I'm a guy who picked a pretty awesome job but wants a separation of work and personal life.
>>
>>682167826
Oh I'll look back then I just got here
>>
>>682148134
It's his thread though cunt face
>>
>>682168455
Smart. When you get 20 in you won't miss anything about the fire service except the guys.
>>
>>682168455
1114 out, your thread now.
>>
have you ever been severely burned or know any other firefighter who have been severely burned or injured fighting a fire? what usually happens? do you care a first aid kit or something like that?
>>
>>682169039
>>682169992
I'm already pretty much there lol my job is pretty easy as far as workload vs hours on duty go, even being a busier department. Not many fires and lots of BS medical/taxi rides. I can't complain much. But I really don't care about anything anymore except helping people who truly deserve/need it and aren't just abusing us, and performing in a way to give maximum viable effort while ensuring we all go home safe.

1114? AFPD?
