How smart are you /b/?

1.5 kg, still. You see, the flies compress the air inside the jar by being there, so the pressure of the air on the bottom of it is enough to weigh it down the exact 0.5 kg the flies are weighing
>>
>>681976431

Scale reads 1kg due to the downward force of the jar. The flies do not exert any downward force as they are clearly depicted as flying. Their wings provide sufficient upward force to cause them to "hover" as per picture.

so when a plane flies over your head...?
>>
>>681976675
no, because the upward force creates an equal downforce on the bottom of the jar

which cancels out and becomes negligible in this problem. (i.e zero, the size of your brain)

then i wont feel anything because there is enough air around me. in this case its an enclosed space

it depends on where you set the zero on the scale

On a larger scale, the earth is an enclosed space for air?

No. It doesn't cancel out you dense fucker. Mythbusters proved that the net weight of a closed system stays the same, regardless of flight.

Scale reads ZERO... its a new technology one that only works when 50lbs or more gets added onto it

It weighs 1 kg because the flies are flying, dummies. It would only read 1.5 kg if they were all on the bottom of the jar.

Archimedes solved that a while ago.

Scales measure force.
jar exerts 1kg of force, flies exert 0.5kg of force to stay in flight (assuming the flies are in flight), but the force disperses throughout the jar so it cancels out, being 1kg overall

This is semi true. The flies would only compress the air inside the jar if they magically appeared in it while it was still sealed.

Furthermore, what is the unit in which the scale measures the weight of the items in question? Is this in an area with intense radiation or photon emission? What is the gravitational force?
>>
>>681978224
But there are only 5 flies, weighing 100g each (assuming they are identical). I think we're talking less about a lot of flies, and more about a few scary fucking bugs.

Oh boy, ANOTHER retarded physics problem there where the OP has nothing better to do than samefag his own thread for 5 hours on end.

I have a question /b/. If the flies had strings attached to the bottom of the jar and them, and maintained flight, what would the scale read?
>>
>>681979619
0 because thee jar would fly.
>>
>>681979721
Assume they could only, collectively, generate .5kg of lift, and we will say the string weighs nothing.
>>
>>681979319
Why the fuck would you, you non-autistic faggot?

Do you even science? How the fuck can you expect an accurate answer without presenting possible variables? I could go perform this same fucking experiement on planet 5UKM1D1k-5, and come up with completely different results.

The entire problem with all of these questions is that they lack sufficient information, that's what makes them so ambiguous, and exactly why people waste so much time searching for an answer that does not exist. What you think =/= what it is.
>>
It's 1.5kg. Having this many flies in a normal jar wouldn't allow them to fly. They would just lie on the bottom, dead I suppose.
>>
>>681978968
>>681979100

Considering the simplicity of the mistake, yes, in this case I'd expect him to manage basic grammar before asking the question. Spare me your bullshit.
>>
>>681979978
When variables are not mentioned, they are assumed to have the standard earth values. If all variables had to be repeated in every question, we would waste a lot of words, just to accomodate autists like you.

YOU are clearly the one with no science background.

>>681976431

>>
>>681980162

>>
>>681979978
All things are done with an end goal of practical application. So, when specific variables are not given, you always assume 0 or "magic" (no friction for example). When you must input one of your own (such as gravity) you input them bases on ideal human living conditions of earth. These questions do not demand accurate answers as they are only relating to one principle at a time. This is implied and wildly understood. It's why no one else had trouble coming up with an answer.
>>
>>681979900
But if there was 1.5kgs of flies it would.
>>
>>681980216
Okay, but if you're doing that then you aren't providing a solution or an answer to any question, you're only appeasing the person who proposed it. There's absolutely no point in that.
>>
>>681980675
What does the weight of the flies have to do with the lift they create?
>>
>>681980162
It doesn't matter how easy basic grammar is. They are unrelated. Just because you don't know basic Hiragana (I assume), something children know, that doesn't mean you don't know that you can't do simple addition. It's a logical fallacy to draw a line where there is none.
>>
>>681980884
More flies = more lift faggot.
>>
>>681980675
Ok, but like I said. The flies can generate only enough to lift themselves (.5kg). The jar still weighs 1kg. Would the scale read 1kg or 1.5kg? My money is on 1.5kg but being the retard that I am I do not know.
>>
>>681980941
>that doesn't mean you don't know how to do simple addition
fixed.
>>
>>681981186
>The flies can generate only enough to lift themselves (.5kg)
>implying flies can't ascend
Trust me, I'm an expert on fly aeronautics and they must be able to generate some lift
>>
>>681979052
I googled hexacyaline acid and it doesn't have any results, does that mean you're not from MIT?
>>
Well, according to the picture, the scale reads I I I I I I
>>
>>681981343
Exactly so if there was 1.5 flies in the 1.0 jar on a string it could fly.
>>
>>681976431
Each fly weight 100g ? Is this fucking serious ?
>>
>>681980762
Are you retarded? There's no 'point' in answering the question at all, because it's a hypothetical situation that needs no solving. Nothing is at stake.

It's a thought exercise that attempts to mess with peoples intuitive thinking. Discussing it is the point.

It doesn't matter on what planet this happens and what the exact variables are. The point is, do flying objects not attached to the jar, but inside it, affect the jar's weight?

If so, why does putting a lid on it change anything? What if the flies had strings?

Do you get it now?
>>
>>681979211
what the fck did you just fucking weigh about me you little fly? i'll have you know i have over 500 confirmed jars and the whole scale forces behind me...
>>
>>681977183
yet the balance feels the full .5 right, fucking genius man.
>>
>>681981343
Let'ss say they weigh .5kg, and can collectively generate .6kg of lift. What would the scale read?
>>
>>681981643
This makes no sense.
If you had 1 ton of flies, but each generates an uplift, that is just the tiniest fraction larger than its own weight, they could all fly, but not lift the jar.
>>
>>681980223
>hurr durr i know the answer,

>doesn't post answer
>>
>>681981990
If they are outside the closed system "glass" it would read 0.9 kg.
Assuming you're not talking about some net lift, but the total lift their wings create.
If they're inside the system it would show 1.5 kg.
>>
>>681982021
>tiniest fraction larger than its own weight
So your saying that a fly can't lift anything but it's self? I'm sure it could lift more and if you had a lot of them the jar would lift also.
>>
>>681976431
Physics fag here to lay it straight. First off grams are a measure of mass not weight.

Scale will read 1.5 kilograms

For every action there is an equal but opposite reaction. The flies may be flying but only by creating a downward force. Weight is a force, mass times gravity. Gravity is a constant so downward force created by their wings is just a function of their mass which we know is .5 kilograms hence the scale is the total mass of the flies and the jar.

The amount of mixed units in here. Fucking grams off pressure, grams of force.
>>
>>681976431
depends on:
- if it is 0 at normal air pressure (most are)
- How accurate it is
- The density of the flies
- If it is sealed airtight
In a real scenario I'd say it doesn't change a thing.
Most of the time it would be 1 kg because of the flies inverting a bit of the gravity with their wings.

No it's not. This is an English board, he obviously knows English enough to say "What does the scale read". My English is shit, but I know the rules, hence I can speak and write in English. It's all about following the rules, much like physics.

If this guy knows enough English to say "What does the scale read" instead of something such as "What is written on the scale" or "What what does the scale say" then it follows that he should know enough to discern when to use the plural of a verb. If he, however, cannot even follow such a simple rule, then how the fuck am I to expect him to adhere to the rules of physics.

Let's say his English is shit. How would he understand the explanation given to him, unless explained mathematically (which, let's be real, none of you has the capability). It's unfair for someone to take the time to explain to him the answer, only to have him not understand it. So YES, linguistics and grammar IS important. I'm not even in a related field, but this shit seriously drives me up the fucking walls.

FURTHERMORE, if there is any logical fallacy, it is YOUR example of Hiragana. My example, as I have just stated was related to the topic. Your example, however, falls off as unrelated; since, once again, this is an English fucking board.
