Moths freak me out for some reason.

Maybe it's because the only time I encounter moths is when it's dark and I lie in my bed and hear bat sized wings flapping around in my room, dunno lol.

COOL FACT:

The lunar moth in your picture has those long tendrils on the bottom of its wings because the tendrils make a certain sound wave that confuses the bats that hunt them in the night, its screws up the bats ecolocation and they go for the tendrils instead of the moth itself.

the moth can then escape, the lunar moth has no mouth so it needs to find a female and mate within 48 hours before it starves to death.

oh boy, nobody's brought up hairpencils yet?

coremata are pheromone emitting structures located internally within male moths, used to attract females and repel other males. they bust it out when it's time to mate (and since most moths don't live very long as adults, it's always time to mate!)

Not at all, especially if you can find a fertilized female on your own. The best way to do it is set up a blacklight outside.

Female moths have thinner, less feathery antennae. It's super easy to tell on the giant silkmoths if you can get one to your light.

Otherwise, eggs and even cocoons are pretty cheap to buy online. I used a guy named Bill Oehkle as my supplier when I bought a couple luna moth cocoons.

For food, just get leaves off of a tree outide. some species are picky with their foodplant, though. I've found most like maple.

If you at the container in this picture (>>681662632) , I raised about a dozen caterpillars to adults in that. I got it for $1 at Goodwill. It's plastic, about 1 gallon volume, and has a lid.

For catching them, a butterfly net helps, but for the giant silkmoths, they move slowly, so just kinda pushing them into a brown paper sack was effective. Also, if you catch a female at a light, she's already mated. So if you keep her in the sac, she'll lay eggs that you can catch.

adult moths don't live long, so it might be around a week tops before it dies.

Bugs aren't really picky regarding containment, they just need a decent amount of space relative to their body size, particularly if they're a moulting species. And whatever they eat within their habitat.

I keep my stick insects in a tall wooden CD holder with the shelves removed and netting across the front.

I got a bunch of eggs off ebay that I hatched out and grew. Sold all but a male/female pair after they grew a bit and now am collecting eggs to sell/hatch another generation.

I've also got some Australian Spiny, A. Fallax and Phobaeticus Magnus (These are hatching, but seem to have a high death rate at birth, went from about 10 to 2 now, but one made it through its first moult so hopefully I'll get a few), all of which I got off Ebay too either as eggs or babies.

This is in the UK btw, I recall that some Stick insects are permit only in the US for some reason so they might not be so readily available if you live there.

no, no moths have venom glands or a way to deliver a deliberate sting.

some are indeed poisonous - the caterpillars get their toxins from the plants they eat. but i wouldn't advocate trying to eat them.

Does look like they're available on the US Ebay, usually shipped from UK:

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1311.R1.TR12.TRC2.A0.H0.Xstick+ins.TRS0&_nkw=stick+insect+eggs&_sacat=0

I'd message them though if you intend on buying them. Eggs are robust enough to be fine through postage, but it might be worth paying a bit extra for overseas.

>>
>>681668415

Crickets, grasshoppers, Cockroaches, Stick/Leaf Insects and Mantids are all part of a bigger group of bugs.

They're basically categorized in the same family because unlike most bugs they're not born as larvae, but as a tiny version of their adult form that goes through various growth moults.

You're referring to hemimetabolism, and you forgot the biggest group there, the hemipterans; true bugs.

Under ITIS we don't bother breaking down the infraclass Neoptera beyond the individual insect orders, they're different enough as is.

crickets, grasshoppers, and wetas all belong to the same order: orthoptera

there's no sense categorizing the others into the same supergroup, they're all very different (although you may be surprised to find mantids and cockroaches share a close common ancestor)

Moths are attracted to light because they normally navigate by moonlight. They use the moons light to guide them to the moon, where they mate and feed. The reason they go to the moon is because there is no oxygen there so there will be no predators there.

i fucked mothra in my Buster suit.
she'd come over sometimes while her boyfriend was away after school.

once the door would close she'd almost instantly get naked. most times she'd put on her favorite song and start sucking. then she would cry. her tears and makeup would drip down her face onto my dick. its surprising how cold tears are. eventually i finally asked her what was wrong. in between licks she told me that her favorite song was also her bfs favorite song. so even though she loved hearing it and it totally got her pussy wet, it also made her think about the fact that she was cheating on her boyfriend. i dont think i ever came harder down somebodies throat then right after she told me that. she was beautiful. we dont hang out anymore. wanna get lunch?

Dude bugs are super important to the ecosystem. They help breakdown the waste in nature whereafter funghi and stuff take over to break it down into molecules wich are than consumed by the plants and trees to complete the circle. If you'd said mosquitos than yeah fuck 'em annoying little shits ( they're probably important somehow too) but bugs in general are an important link in the chain of life.
