it's about computer memory and file deletion. i want to delete some files off a computer permanently. I know there's programs i could use, my question is what's the best way to know that a file is deleted permanently?
Also, if I installed a new OS on a computer that didn't originally belong to it, then I "permanently delete" the OS, why does computer memory get reduced?

GHex is completely intuitive. When you open a file with it, you see the hexadecimal data of the file. Just click the first number and hold down the zero key until you reach the end. However, I don't know for sure if you can get it on Windows, but there should be an equivalent.
You can't "eat up" disk space, only temporarily reserve it. Short answer is, you have to delete the old OS before installing the new one, otherwise the memory will still be reserved.

well that last part makes sense.
so overwriting a file, let's say i'm operating on windows. I saved a thread from /b/ a long time ago on a computer, and a whole bunch of pics came out of that. i recycle binned them, and deleted them "permanently". i don't want anyone to see them if they use a file recovery program.
If i myself recovered those files right now, and edited them with Ghex, what trace of any of those files would remain? would those files be considered overwritten then?
