Oh wow. I don't think have any family like that. Not comparing, but I can definitely vouch for being affected and making a life long choice while young. It's why I'm not attracted to certain people or really associate with a portion of my "culture" largely thanks to two family members.
I think if you really want to start eventually trying more, start with weak liquors mixed in soda/pop. Look for the flavors, gradually step it up. Keep away from the common choices people make in bars and mix at home with higher quality stuff. I can't say alcohol has many real positive things for it, I just loooove (good) flavors. So, it's up to you.
