Depends on a lot of stuff.
If you just want to learn how to do stuff properly: Ruby
If you want to do front-end kind of stuff: JavaScript
If you want to do it for money/career stuff in corporate: C# or Java
If you're interested in lower level stuff: C/C++
If you want to be a sysadmin: Perl/Python
Database stuff: SQL
Ruby is one of my favs, day job requires C# & JavaScript

pick on LOL, these two languges are the fucking easiest lmao. I've been coding for 30+ years and literally everyone I have ever met who claims that 'C / ASM' is his first language is a fucking idiot.

It doesn't take much skill to code in a langugae which doesn't have complicated programming constructs like classes, generics, regular expressions or exceptions.

It is a huge pain in the ass, depends on your needs I guess. Some people can code high level languages and not care about how things actually work under the hood. But if you really understand how things work then you can start to do some really funky stuff. Hacking is a by-product of understanding how things work to the point you can fuck with them.

Code academy is not good at all. It gives you the impression that coding is about following simple recipes all over again.

The best way to start coding is in my opinions games engine :
You have a project, you start simple, add more "brain" to your project and end up learning how to code.

Unity would be a great one to start given that C# is easier than C++ AND C# can be used (trough xamarin) for cross platform development.

But the core of learning how to code :
Have a project and do it. Think about how to solves YOUR problems. Copy and modify codes from existing projects (thats how I started when I could not even speak english).
Following exercises is like the OPPOSITE of how your brain should be wired to code.

i agree with this. it is the most efficient and FUN way to "learn" how to code.

however, you need to know atleast the basics to get started. so chugging through some tutorials is pretty much necessary otherwise you'll be completely lost when trying to make something.

i also agree with Unity being a good start for beginners. there's tons of resources on it.

Quads of truth.

I know all that shit, too. Life is pretty sweet. Travel. Well paid. Went to college but degree is not relevant. I got into this game when cult of the dead cow/l0pht were big, and black hats were hired after hacking big companies. I built pcs for beer money, Lan parties with Duke Nukem/Red Alert, and read a fuck ton of old yellowed txt files I printed up from various sources. Over time you get good. And that's called experience. I got one cert but it's in networking and expired. Certs used to add $5k to your asking salary, but I don't know now.

Learn the skills relevant to your interests. Want to make games? Learn Lua or java/android, objective c or whatever apple is. Want to sys engineer? Learn python, bash, php, sql, javascript/node, c, perl. Network engineer? IP headers, c, protocols rfcs, etc

Basically you have to live and breath it, but first figure out what you want to do, set a goal.

And turned it into $12,000/mo. It's not always about how many languages you know, but how proficient you are with them and your overall understanding of information architecture and how to integrate effeciently with various development stacks.

Learning the other languages I listed will help me take my career to a new level by becoming a true full stack developer capable of writing complex and efficient back end data systems as well as front end web applications and single page applications.

I just love reading these autistic strawman arguments that demonstrate no real understanding of the world around you or even the point I'm trying to convey. This is the new 4chan cancer. I really have the impression you're a teenager.

Please, tell me about all the college students that graduate and immediately get jobs in their fields. Last time I checked the average college graduate was over 60k in debt and living with their parents until they're 26.5 years old (Source: The Quarterlife Crisis - Dr. Meg Jay).

Also, a bootcamp isn't a school, and it's definitely not for retards. These guys want you to code for like 80 hours a week for like six months straight, you need to do an IQ test to get in, and they only have like 15 seats available for the thousands that apply. Also I'm on a scholarship. So the worst case scenario is that I just go back to the job I'm currently working now.

>Get ready to type a LOT of code before they even take you seriously

Thanks for the newsflash. What other wisdom do you have for us?

Even so, an entry level job in coding pays anywhere from 55k - 65k a year, which is a livable wage.

Not quite.

They don't teach you how to program in CS curriculums. Sure, they might have a few classes that go over the basics, but anyone working exclusively as a programmer has to wind up teaching themselves. They always have to be learning, coding, and challenging themselves, which is why people don't like doing it.

In that respect, programming is not like working a traditional IT job. There's no reliable college degree in programming.

This is my programming motto:
If I can't find it, I'll make it
If I can't make it, I'll learn how to make it

I don't particularly care for any language, I care about results. Of course I'll take the specifics about the language into account when making something, but generally I don't particularly care.

I generally prototype in python or javascript though, before switching to a real language.

I remember my old Commodore 64 & my TRS-80 Model III. I was a teenager, and I thought making games in Basic was the shit! I even dabbled in machine language (so I could fuck with games, and basically cheat).
But then life happened. Girls, alcohol & drugs became more important. Working my ass off at wharehouse jobs, etc...
Now I'm 50, with two kids I'm raising by myself, 15 & 12, and they're just getting into programming. Ruby at CodeAcademy so far, but they're losing interest fast and want to try another language. Any /b/ros got any suggestions for them? They like artistic stuff, web design mostly right now, but they're young still. Where should they start?

If you don't specialize you are either the fucking tech genius that can do everything because he started coding at the same time he started reading, or just that guy that can't do anything right.

Specialize. Specialize twice if necessary. Most senior devs are one trick poney with a bit of know-how out of their specialization area. They know enough to understand what others seniors are doing, but they would need to learn first if they were to take their jobs.

Fair point - but if you can't handle Java, IMO, with all the wonderful documentation out there, you probably can't handle C with all the memory management you have to do yourself.

Python, mebbe.
>>
>>681479136
Depends mate.

If your goal is solid foundation, yes, C is the best start. By far.

If your goal is to make some silly mobile app or piss code in a world corporate back office, then being a one trick poney that don't understand what he is really doing is fine (hence java/c# is fine)

C++, C#, Python, Java, Php, Html

>>
>>681479729
In java, you don't choose your way of thinking, it's object-oriented.
for a hello world, you have to create a class.
That's not the case in python, ruby, C++, and all the other OO languages.

imo, if you can't choose your paradigm, and organized the code the way you like, it's not good.

It gets harder as you get older, not sure about Germany. I often employ programmers over 40 if they're good. About 80% of programmers are under 35 (see StackOverflow survey).
It depends on what you want. A degree always helps, but it's not required. If you want to do it for the rest of your life, sure. Otherwise you could study something else (like management) to advance your career.
>>
>>681479676
Or for fine tuning perfs on calculation when fortran is not practical enough. Granted, it's usually C++, but the actual perf parts are written in strict style C.

Also it makes student discover pointers, which most other languages hide.

You don't "learn assembly," you learn assembly for a certain chipset or hardware architecture.

It's not worth learning beyond understanding what assembly is and represents to higher-level languages or lower-level machine code, unless you're specifically looking to write for embedded devices.
>>
>>681469255
Programming is programming. There are classes that teach common programming structures without touching on specific languages. The programmer picks the language according to what the application is supposed to do. This is not a fucking competitive sport and no one language is better than the rest, it should depend on what the program is supposed to do, fucktards.

Why the fuck did you say you are a femanon ? Is it in any point RELEVANT to anything you are saying after ? No, it's fucking not.

If you truly want to learn how to code, you'd better lose that attitude. By saying that your body (WHICH IS IRRELEVANT FOR CODING) has boobs and vagina, you are centering the discussion on your boobs and vagina.
And not on the ACTUAL FUCKING TOPIC.

I don't need to know that you are a female. All other users are anonymous, gender irrelevant, grey nicknames on stackexchange/some github repo/other forums. And it works fine.

So, my best, best, best advice to you would to go into it security.

There will always be new software, always new bugs, and always a security risk. My man is in IT security and he laughs and smokes weed everyday, makes 200k. He said it's an industry that creates itself, there will always be a high level security risk that justifies his existence.

I'll tell you what worked for me, set up your own it business on a pc in your closet, program it, lock it down, secure it, and try to make money with it. Eventually you'll learn what you need to learn. Experience!

Then go to free meetups, on meetup.com, in the stuff you need to get better at. People there are always looking for newfriends at their job. If you know what your doing, they will come to YOU, but you gotta be out and mixing with them.

Social engineering is as big a part of getting a job as your skill. If people like you, you'll always have a job, bonus points if you know what you're doing.

Good luck and much success, anon.
