Yep. I saw Vinnie playing in a jazz trio at the North Hollywood Bar & Grill, back in 1989 or so. Had a table right in front of the stage -- no more than 10 feet from his bass drum.
Was *amazing* to see him so close up. He blew my mind. I followed his drumming as closely as I could, but the guy is from outer space. He would lose me every now and then. I'll never forget that show.

This guy has the ability to fit in every gig he's played in. And you forgot to mention one of the biggest act's he's ever played with.
Back around 2008 I went to see sting play with a "rock formation", an outdoor festival. I was fucking psyched because not only was sting one of my greatest influences, Ialso thought i'd be seeing Vinnie Colaiuta, which, would be a treat for any fucking drummer.
Turns out, it wasn't Vinnie, I was dissapointed at first, I couldn't see who the guy was because we we're too far. But the drums, they sounded so fucking right, it was one of the greatest performances I'd ever seen, the renditions of the songs were fucking perfect, especially the police songs, with the energy.
Later in the show, they introduced Josh Freese, I fucking lost it, I had seen NIN live twice with him drumming and it was phenominal, but I couldn't believe how much he put sting's piece to life as well.
To that day, I have althought thought of Josh Freese as god amongsts session drummers, up there, with any other names I could add to this thread :

I'll give you your Buddy Rich and John Bonham. There are tons of amazing drummers out there. MY personal fav is Tim "Herb" Alexander. He is by far the most creative drummer I have ever heard.
Seriously tho, John Bonham will forever be the single greatest drummer. Remember: it isn't just what he did, it's what he contributed to the band. His drums alone are top 5 but combined with the rest of LZ, their music is untouchable and inspired half the drummers you see in this thread. Bonham has stood the test of time and is always atleast top 3 along with peart and buddy rich.

I'll give it to Hoglan, who was insanely impressive, he played with gigs like Death, Symbolic was a drumming masterpiece. His albums with Strapping Young lad we're nothing to laugh about, it was crazy shit.
The difference with Lombardo and Hoglan, is Hoglan obviously had a rigorous practice routine, and kept getting better.
I saw slayer with marilyn manson about 7 years ago, and Lombardo couldn't keep his basedrums straight throughout the whole set. It was sad.

Don't let it get to you, I was also impressed by his speed and results on his albums, that sounded great. But the guy had like a phd in phsyics or something crazy like that. The fact that he was as good as he was in metal was imrpessive,
but to consider him an accomplished drummer, is a definitive overstatement. Must of been ridiculously overwhelming to play alongside such grand drummers at the drumfest. But then again, he played there, that's also an accomplishment.
