As a writer, he was top notch though he has lost his creativity for the most part long ago. His best work was when he collaborated with Waters and you can hear it in his guitar emptiness and unfocused meanderings on those tunes Roger (whom I don't like frankly) did not work on with him.
If I'm fair, his latest album is terrible. I know he needs the money, but come on man. It's an embarrassment.
While most of these "best guitarist" rankings are based on popularity, rather than actual talent, no serious list leaves Joe Satriani, Eddy Van Halen and Steve Vai out of the top ten. Those three are pure hand speed, fluidity, precision, and the quickest bridgework ever know. Serious guitarists have trouble even attempting some of their best work.

Pretty much says it all. Not a guitar player but am a vocalist has-been myself. Used to love Gilmour. As you listen to more guitarists you realize he is way overproduced and has to run shit through a pissload of equipment to sound decent. I heard this has always been the complaint about him from others who have played with him. I've seen him live a few times and he can't play live much at all and usually has a backup guitarist with him on stage to do the real playing. He'll grab a few riffs and that's it.
His voice is one-dimensional in my book too with no range on top of it. He's always overreaching to be edgy and mysterious, but really only sounds like a dying old man and always has.

I just saw him perform at the UC myself and both me and my entire group thought he sucked. In fact, I know a couple guys that work there and there was some pretty obvious lip syncing and dubbing going on. On the tunes he actually played on, you must have noticed he had two other leads and they did all the heavy lifting. He's not the same Gilmour I saw long ago and it's kind of sad.
Funny how different people can have different impressions. I have seen easily over 500 concerts in my day though, so I might be coming from a different perspective. If you'd never seen Gilmour or Floyd before, it probably sounded fantastic but I promise you it was nothing compared to what it was, though I tripped through most of that shit back then.

I'm not a big fan of the UC for concerts, but yeah, nosebleed probably sounded great. It's not built for accoustics obviously. I saw Rush there awhile ago and had seen them easily 20 times in the past and it was hands down their worst performance ever by far. Granted Geddy's voice has been shot for years, but it was bad. There again, a lot of people thought it was great. All a question of perspective.
I'm old enough to have seen Floyd during the Animals tour and in my opinion this is when they peaked. Gilmour hasn't been Gilmour to be honest since he and Waters parted ways. As a guitarist, he's ok, but not more than that. I love his voice, but it's mostly nostalgic preference and familiarity I have come to learn. His vocal range is limited and he was never anything more than an average vocalist anyway.
Long drive for you to UC. I'm not in love with Tinley Park's acoustics either, but they are still better than UC.

My parents saw Floyd many times in their 20's and 30's and my mom said the shows were better than, probably for nostalgic reasons as well. I am a metal head myself, so I'm prefer and am used to much smaller venues. It was Gilmour playing Floyd, so for me it was a good time. I feel kind of bad for him that he is essentially stuck playing Floyd songs. I'm sure he understands that it's what most people want though.
The drive isn't too bad. Took a little over an hour. I haven't been to Tinley since it was the World Theater or whatever it was called.

For me finding these little special gimmicks on an instrument truly captures its spirit.
