I feel like you're only half-right about that though. You have the subculture side of it, and then you have the overwhelmingly large sexual side to it. "It's just a fetish" is a very cheap defense, and is probably the sort of thing you'd expect a furry to scream when their mom accidentally walks in to them fapping to anthropomorphic animals.
In reality, it has the worst of both worlds -- A pretty damn extreme culmination of sexual "fetishes" and a sort of cult subculture.
The only sexual thing I could compare it to is the world of BDSM, though the subculture side of furries causes them to bring it out in the open in an incredibly annoying way.
