I don't doubt that the kid was shot in self defense, as per the law of standing your ground in Florida but you have to consider that he overstepped his bounds and put himself into what he knew could have been a dangerous situation.
As town watch, he was strictly forbidden to engage with suspects, yet he followed anyways. The police told him not to engage, but he did anyways. It was because he engaged that he risked his own life and endangered another, which resulted in death.
