Think of all the people scuba diving who have drowned 70m under the surface where it's barely bright, sometimes they get carried down by currents or they start touring around and forget they don't have enough air for a slow ascent because the depth gives them narcosis (they basically drunk on oxygen). You know you will never breathe fresh air again, it's probably one of the worst deaths

It's horrifying because they can foresee drowning but can't do anything about it, speeding to the surface means almost certain death because decompression disease and you're breathing out of a bottle that will eventually stop giving you air, so then you're just helpless in the dark and without air. And you know all of this is gonna happen.
On the flip side, if you go deep enough (probably >150 m) the oxygen narcosis becomes so great you just pass out, and the pressure around you is enough to keep pushing you down until you're crushed by it

Somewhat, the partial pressure of the oxygen you're breathing becomes greater so your tissues start storing more of it, including your brain. So you get a sorta high, you start to feel it around 40 m but more experienced divers can brush it off. It's really unique though, for me everything looks like disconnected pictures and I laugh a lot underwater, but when you come out you get a killer headache sometimes

In the surface and at not so big depths you naturally float because the pressure on top of you, call it atmospheric pressure, is low enough (1atm at surface and for every 10 m another atmosphere), At a certain depth though the pressure that is pushing you down is greater than that of the air in your lungs pushing you up because of its greater density. So at greater depths you sink more to the bottom, which scuba divers counteract with these bad boys which get air straight from the bottle and act as your second pair of lungs, pulling you up with greater force so you dont sink
