Ask a Buddhist anything
Do you suck dicks?
>>678996241
Nope
I heard that buddhits believe in demons, which you have to ask to be polite and nice with you and help you.
Is it true?
What is your opinion on hoes?
>>678996031
>>678996447
Do you have internal demons? Do you battle with mental unclarity? Tratitional not all buddhist believe in entities, or demons as you think. But there are some who see more spiritual beings both good and bad within the religion.
>not op but also a buddhist.
Why am I in turmoil?
>>678996690
Hoes can do what they want, in the end being loose in the flesh doesnt pay off for them.
how many times have you been defeated by anyone other than Chichi or Bulma?
WHY DO YOU JUST SIT THE FUCK AROUND NOT DOING SHIT, WHY ARE YOU A FAGGOT, WHY DO YOU SUCK.
>>678996915
Because you masturbate to frequently and you have trouble focusing in your day, its affecting your work and relationships. Admit it.
>>678996447
Maybe some Buddhists do. Buddhism has core teachings which are often mixed somewhat successfully with folk religions and in the west even christianity. The belief in supranatural entities is evident in the Buddhist scriptures, but such entities do not impact the road to nibbana which everyone must walk alone. The Buddha refused to answer questions about the nature of such things, stating that tje question was immaterial to reaching the goal and pondering on such things is counterproductive. I do not believe in any such creatures.
>>678996996
If you are referring to monks? Its like any holy person, why do priest just sit at the church all day.
How's your community college intro to eastern philosophy class going?
>>678996690
Hoes how? The one with loose flesh is not OP
How long do you sit? How often?
>>678996765
Saved anon. While most of the ones listed are cancer, AMA and unpopular opinion threads are usually interesting.
>>678997158
PRIESTS SIT AT THE CHURCH ALL DAY BECAUSE THEY ARE FULL OF SHIT AND SO ARE YOU.
>>678996869
No, I was just curious about that, since I have read it in some right-wing press and I was wondering what do actual buddhists think about that
>>678997011
Wow. Who the fuck are you?
How much is too much?
>>678996031
What is your favorite sexual position?

I never attended such class. I am a lawyer by profession
>>678997187
lol community college im at yale
What are your thoughts on ASMR?
>>678997274
OP didn't say he was a monk, not all buddhists sit around all day meditating. maybe meditate a while in the morning or just a simple prayer before leaving the house.
>>678997241
It really depends, but around 20 min when I do. I sit quite often tho
>>678996031
Do you do everything you can to get good karma?
>>678996031
would Buddha have a FB account if he were still alive ?
>>678997434
Actually it's missionary, but with her legs a bit higher up.
>>678996031
can i get in nibanna, even if im not a buddhist?
>>678997614
Karma (kamma) is action, which leads to a result - vipaka. I do what I can to act skillfully, knowing that I will fail sometimes.
>>678997634
I don't think so. He probably wouldn't have such concerns. On the other hand he spread the Dharma as much as he could, so it might be...
>>678997853
Well, yes and no. You can't reach nibbana without ending dukha, and since the Buddha Dharma is the road to nibbana, it might be difficult. The Buddha did find the way himself though, so it is possible
>>678996031
What makes you a buddhist, whats the buddhism principles?
What do buddhist think happens after you die?
>>678998061
Attended any retreats?

How does the vinegar taste?
>>678998371
I am a Buddhist because I take refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha.
The main principles are found in The Four Noble Truths, The Noble Eightfold Path, The Three Marks of Existence. Those you can google :) I will elaborate on anything you have questions on
>>678998376
I do not attend retreats. Maybe some day. My favorite teacher is Thanissaro Bikkhu
>>678998380
Important in what regard?
>>678998504
Don't really know. Never tasted it. Probably bad?
>>678997971
If you fail is of no concern. Shouldn't you not act in "good" or "bad" in order to reach enlightenment? Or do you feel you need to be born past this life in order to learn all of your lessons?
>>678998768
Recommend Bhante Suddhāso

Shame shame shame on you.
The vinegar is life, and in your view it is bitter. Learn your shit OP.
>>678998690

>>678998371
About death: Most believe you get reborn, that is some part of you continues to have impact on the world (there is no soul in Buddhism). Rebirth is thus different from the hindu notion of reincarnation where the soul is given a new body.
Upon reaching nibbana, rebirth ends.
>>678999109
This.
Dude doesn't even know of this little gem.
Even if he focuses on zen buddhism, he should still know about pic related.
>>678998977
Good or bad depends on the situation, right? There are things you should avoid in order to reach nibbana, thus ending the fruition of karma and thus dukkha.
I do not feel I have to be reborn to learn things. That is not how rebirth is taught in theravada
>>678999004
Thanks :)
>>678999109
I would not take the time, since there were other anons with unanswered questions.
>>678996031
Why would you proclaim yourself a Buddhist instead of top religion like Hinduism? Buddhism is just full of memes and pretty much a total meme religion.
>>679000423
There are a lot of pop-buddhism and pop-buddhists around for sure. That does not make the Buddhas teachings any less true and beneficial.
Why is nibbana an end goal?
What specifies that attaining nibanna is more beneficial than to keep reincarnating?
What is the point of setting of Nibanna as a goal?
Are you ready to be disappointed?
>>679000670
if you want to be a total cuck they are beneficial. Buddhism teaches you to let everyone shit on you and smile.
>>679000776
Nibbana is the end goal because it is the end of suffering, which is pretty sweet.
Same as above.
Uhm.. Same as above.
What do you have in mind?
>>679000798
The Buddhist take would not be to smile outwardly and be broken on the inside, as you suggest.
A Buddhist simply wouldn't care about such things, which makes it moot. This is not the same as inaction, though. I would act to protect my and mine, as would anyone
>>678999662
Even if you end your suffering. Won't holding onto the good things in this world hold you back from bliss? And you feel that this is the life that all of your lessons have been learned? You will not be reincarnated and move on to nirvana?
>>679001369
There are no lessons to be learned. One can walk the path to nibbana, going some or all of the way. I do not think I will be enlightened. Enligthenment happens before death and ends rebirth
>>678996031
Are you white?
>>679002172
Yes
>>678996031
OP, do you also know Alice the psychologist who also does threads here?
>>679002483
Uhm. No? Never seen such a thread
>>679001948
No lessons to be learned? That's a good one. And yes enlightenment does end reincarnation. Unless you choose to come back and be a teacher for others.
>>679002318
How did you end up following a gook religion?
>>679004215
What does "gook" mean? I'm not a native English speaker
>>679004856
Bump
>>679004856
Racial slur for Asians.
>>679004856
It's a negative term against asians.
I'm also Buddhist.. What form do you follow?

Well then I feel fine following it.
>>679006638
I am theravadin. What are you?
>>679006997
Holy shit was expecting a zin. Theravada here as well
>>679007083
Lol why? :)
>>679007247
Born and raised in Florida. Never found but maybe 2 others who follow Buddhism, and actually know what they were talking about. One of which from Thailand. The other same as me. But they were both Zin, never found another Theravada Buddhist.
>>678996031
Whats your favorite Dhammapada verse?
>>679008384
That is a though one. Probably the householder sutta. If you mean a single verse as in a quotable one, well... I'm not good with quotes like that.. I'm more the re-telling kind of person :)
>>679008384
Job 69:420
>>678999039
B-but even buddha thought of it as a bitter taste, because that's the way vinegar tastes. Just how it really is, Lao'c is a hippie faggot who lives in a self-delusion that everything is beautiful but Buddha tastes sweet as sweet and bitter as bitter. True clear mirror.
Shame on you tho OP for not knowing about the vinegar tasters

Well I've never met anyone at all. Not that I've tried. Have a friend who is kinda into Buddhism, but he also finds truth in other paths.

Do you have any idea how little his worldly possessions have been? He was a rich man's son and had everything men commonly dream of but he gave it all up because he recognized that all that ends in ruin.
So he searched for something beyond the shallow pleasures of the world. He looked inside of himself for years for an answer.

>>679009756
So there is heresy among buddhism where such beings are worshipped?
>>679009531
Upaya.
Skillful means.
The got introduced into buddhism because the buddha picked up on the beliefs of his times to open the mind's eye of the people he met.
Buddhism says all life is suffering due to our connections to things. So my question becomes, if we look at Jesus as just a revolutionary dude, rather than god/son of god etc. Wasn't he a pretty damn good Buddhist?
>>679009756
Neither believe nor disbelieve.
>>679010178
No. Some believe some do not. It is immaterial to the following of the path to liberation.
The Buddha said one should not concern oneself with such questions. I have observed that I do not believe in such beings and do not dwell further on it
>>679009628
Fair enough.
Btw, for anyone who's interested in Buddhism id recommend this book as an introduction:
"A Survey of Buddhism: Its Doctrines and Methods Through the Ages" by Sangharakshita
This nigger isnt some dry scholar, but was a practicing monk for a while and started his own movement. His writing style is clear and to the point, no filler bullshit. Very rewarding read.
And how awesome is this?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEbd436ZWVo
>>679009602
Another buddhist here, why wouldn't you meditate? Sure practicing mindfulness is great but still meditation is important in anyones Buddhist practice. Why don't you?
>>679010178
Only in the eyes of people who don't understand buddhism. In buddhism there is of course ambitious people too. They imagine buddhahood to be a state of ultimate coolness and so they are vying for this state and being recognized as such.
But to a Buddha everything is empty. Nothing holy.
>>679010294
He wasn't a Buddhist though. There are some of his actions which would be considered skillful and others which would not. This discussion is very popular among Westeners - especially Western Buddhists who used to be Christian or still see themselves as some kind of Christian. The discussion could go on forever

Hold on, when the Buddha experienced enlightenment, the very first thing he exclaimed was that all sentient being were enlightened along with him.
I think your religion is definitively (by Christian standards at least) idolatrous. I also believe that it is a cult of perdition; you get in but it ensnares you with hopelessness and depression and you can't get out. You become slaves of/to your hierachical system. But I didn't come here to bash you.
If one of your statues/shrines was to be destroyed or threatened with destruction, would you ever support violence as a means to counteract it, or as reprisal?
If the answer is no, you have my every blessing.
>>679010641
If you can't trust his words, retrace his steps. If you have a burning question, sit down for a few years until you find the answer.
Don't trust, verify.
>>679010641
I followed his teachings and found the promises to be true. Originally I just got into meditation to deal with anger issues. Found out Buddhism is pretty much the where-from of mindfulness meditation. Caught on from there. Been almost 6 years now

Alan Watts
Alan Watts
Alan Watts
I don't agree with some of his assessments of the modern world. But regarding Zen, he has been spot on.
I'm not sure if i would call myself a Buddhist but the first man who i was ever truly able to be myself around was a buddhist. We also saw the society in the same way. Well... I was a little more optimistic. I looked up the two different types of buddhism (the main ones anyway). He's the type that wants to hit nirvana and end the cycle i think, whereas i like the idea of Bhuddahood alot. Although life has been quite difficult at times in a lot of ways, i like it because i feel there is so much to learn and enjoy from it. On the flip side there is a lot of pain but you can also learn from that too if you remove yourself from it.
Do you feel like you will reach nirvana in this lifetime? I think i may have accidentally done it and it terrified me... Now that i feel normal again i still am not sure what to think about it.
>>679010806
Sitting meditation like zazen for example. Good for you if you can achieve the state of mind that you have while sitting meditation while you walk or drive, I know it is possible but isn't it much harder? Did you ever try to sit? Why don't you do it? Genuinenly interested.

No dogma at all, friend. The Buddha encouraged people to challenge everything he taught during his time. When one understands things clearly, then compassion is something that naturally follows. You arent forced to suddenly become compassionate. A monk will accept whatever food he is offered. There is not much more to it.
The interpretation of the 1st precept for lay followers is not clear. Some think eating meat is not OK, some do as long as you do not kill the animal (thus it's the direct harming which is not to be practiced). Many Buddhists eventually go vegetarian anyway out of compassion.
But monks will generally accept whatever given. They are not consumers, so they do not impact the economy of killing anyway
>>679016165
I still my mind. It is what I practice when meditating, and after a short while one will develop the ability to still the mind anytime anywhere. It is amazing

This. You will not find a better book written by anyone who has both great experience and knowledge.

>>679017138
There is no one answer.
The Buddha had a burning question (escaping sickness, aging, death) and he needed an answer.
>>679016875
Two things:
1) The precept clearly states, that one undertakes the training rule to abstain from intentionally harming living creatures, so there really isn't much of a problem there
2) Buddhism is flexible. A follower can be as adherent as one wants or has the ability to. You will find Buddhist fishermen. Is the act of catching and killing fish skillful? No. But a person is not completely bad or not a "real" Buddhist just for being a fisherman. There are other areas of life where this person might be more compassionate or mindful than any vegetarian, non-fishing Buddhist. Buddhism is about growing as a person, not blindly following commandments
>>679017138
OP here. My take on this is, you simply sit down, cross your legs, close your eyes, observe your body. Thus you are mindful. When thoughts arise, you let them go.
Just like th
>>679017352
>>679017056
I dont mind Zen, boys. But I believe most people will reap greater benefits from a gradual understanding of the core principles of Buddhism and moving on from there.
>>679017555
How does this make sense in response to my asking how to meditate?
Life once created must die. All that varies is agency and timing.
To not kill for food merely delegates death to another process, often far more cruel. That is fact, not opinion.
It may be argued that raising creatures to eat is cruel because they'd not exist otherwise.
It may be argued that breeding is cruel because it serves nothing but to create a creature which suffers.
>>679017624
Makes sense, I've often thought about going vegetarian since I absolutely love animals, it's something about their eyes and nature that appeals to my inner being, cows in particular they have the most innocent looking eyes ,but the lama's statement clouded my decision and I was using this as an excuse to justify consuming meat ,now I have no excuses and I will actively try to be more mindful about this.
Thank you for your time anon

> Nansen said: "If you had been there, you could have saved the cat."
Yeah, Zen can seem kinda fucked up.

Seeking an answer was his form of meditation. He sat motionless for a long time until he had cobwebs in his hair. But nothing worked.
Until one morning he recognized what he has been missing.

This makes no sense , citation?
>>679016280
And we think Siddhartha died from eating bad pork! So clearly some room for interpretation when it comes to vegetarianism in Buddhism.
>>679018709
Who are we?
>>679018706
I'm not OP and don't have a citation. But it's a translation of a koan, which is something certain Zen Buddhists use.
>>679018831
We are, who we think we are.
Amirite OP?
>>679019093
I was being literal here ;) Also, in Buddhism "we" do not ponder who "we" are, says Buddha
>>679018706
It is one of Zen's most famous koans (paradoxial riddles).

>Isn't killing an innocent animal wrong? How could a holy man, one of the greatest zen masters of all time, do such a thing? And why would a seemingly nonsensical act would have saved the cat?
The answers lie in the mind.
>>679018831
Darn! I was hoping my lack of citation would go unnoticed. I've forgotten the source of my information; sorry buddy.
>>679018990
The meaning behind this must have been lost in translation, shame you don't have a citation would've been nice to know what this koan means.
>>679019303
Well I read he died of old age, but it really doesn't matter does it?
>>679019093
Don't go there. Thoughts tend to ensnare us. Trying to avoid all thought also tends to ensnare us.

>>679019347
No, it has been carefully passed on through the generations. People study these koans for years if not decades.

I meditate differently than most people. I listen to music and think about things that have happened. The lessons i can learn from both the good and bad experiences. I even try and find the humour of it, so that i can accept and deal with what has happened and gain greater insight into it in case i befriend someone who goes through a similar experience.
I also think of things i could go on to do, or who i could go on to be. Sometimes it is better for myself and sometimes it is better for society at large. I think of how i could be successful and bring happiness to family, friends and even strangers. There are even times where i think of revenge fantasies against people who have wronged me. By having the fantasy i no longer feel like i actually need to do it in real life. It's like i get it out of my system.
I used to think meditation was about sitting around and not thinking of anything but then i realized, that for some it is the complete opposite. Meditation is used to deal with anxiety, depression, and pretty much any mental health issues one may face. For some people, clearing the mind and not thinking about it is the answer. For others, like myself, focusing on the problem while removing yourself from it can help you better understand it. Pick it apart until and figure out a way to deal with it piece by piece.
A friend of mine who is a bhuddist believes in letting go of anger, which i can completely understand, however, anger is what has gotten me through some of the most difficult parts of my life. It can be very useful if you learn how to separate yourself from it and then utilize it when needed. In my opinion, meditation is about separating yourself from the ego/superego/identity. By figuring out how to become nobody, you can become anybody. By admitting you know nothing, you can then go on to learn everything.
>>679019709
Anon said "we think that.." and I wondered who "we" are in that context.
The other comment was just a joke based on the Buddhas teaching, that we should not contemplate our personality as such thoughts bring dukha and certainly do not bring us closer to nibbana

Have you read Siddharta by Hermann Hesse?
I really felt like having a much better grasp of what it means to not cling to anything. Right after finishing it, I would just lay in my bed, feeling a connection to the world I have never felt since, or before that.

Zen points to an understanding beyond words. No one can explain it to you. These zen stories are just pointers to something ungraspable, inexplicable, yet profound. They have confused and amazed people for centuries.
>>679020530
Do you know a bigger attention whore than good ole Gautama? I don't.

Yeah but buddhism is about what lies beyond that.

Why do you think it's important to identify as a Buddhist? Couldn't you just enjoy their philosophy and take from it what you want?
>>678996031
I am headed to a 10 day vipassana next week. Will you be there?
There is a Buddha of every generation, and he does if I remember correctly. Went to a club in 09-12 I think. To experience and what not. Don't know if it would be him or managed. Or if the FB is real.>>679009934

My best friend is one. As i mentioned in a previous post, he was the first person who ever truly accepted me and nurtured me. I learned a lot from him. I think in a philosophical sense, i would call myself a bhuddist. However, i really don't like labels which is why i wouldn't say it out loud. I haven't done enough research to say i disagree with anything it states. In a way, that is kind of what Buddha wanted i think. He wanted you to think for yourself. To follow in order to learn how to lead. When it came down to it, i don't think he even truly wanted 'buddhism' he just knew that people usually have a mob mentality state of mind and that it would reach as many people as possible.
Its weird, i have contemplated going to a bhuddist temple for a few months to see what its like. At the same time i don't understand how they could to that for their entire lives though. The whole point of what Bhudda believed was the answer to life is dependant on who's asking. You need to find your own. There are so many out there waiting to be found. To each their own i guess.
How long do you meditate daily? How many meditation "techniques" are there? I'm looking to get into meditation but not sure where to being
>>678996765
I like unpopular opinion threads. You get some A+ autism in those and it entertains me.
>>679022703
That act of identifying is a form of attachment. You want to be a Buddhist, poof, you are, albeit a like crappy one. Most Buddhists I know (Cambodians) don't flaunt the fact like a vegan. They just are.
Whiteys just like to brag about it because it's a romantic, exotic notion.
Ironically, it's the most down to earth doctrine to live by. No magical thinking or ridiculous hypocrisy.
Talk is cheap. Sitting for 30 minutes and thinking about nothing is not so easy.

Hi, recently I am very interested in Buddhism and I don't know where start I've seen some documentaries on YouTube about Buddhism, but it doesn't real Buddhism. Where should I start? Maybe visiting a Buddhist centre in my town? Reading some books? What do yo recommend?

>>679027681
>>679028996
Maybe I should elaborate. Buddhism leads to a revelation of... something... for a lack of better word... beyond the usual everyday experience while being contained within those everday experience.
Unlike meeting god, enlightement does not have a specific form. It's not a man, a light or anything else identifiable. It's no specific sound or smell. Instead, it is something that all of a sudden permeates your entire experience of life, knocks you out of your former state of being into another one.
>>679028975
It's all the same.

The buddha might say the Thief hurts himself the most.
The thief is stuck in the world of material attachment. Unenlightened, far from Nirvana. Stuck in the hedonic treadmill with negative Karma following him around.
So in a way yes, spread the other cheek.
