Surprisingly reliable. I bought it CPO back in 2009 at 45K. It's now at ~118K, and in all honesty nothing has gone wrong with it aside from the normal wear and tear stuff (brake pads, tires etc). I plan on driving it until I can't anymore, then parking it in a shed. Without a doubt, it's my favorite car I've owned.
It likes to eat headlight bulbs though. Learn how to replace the headlight bulbs, and buy an economy pack of them if you can. It can run off of regular, but you can tell it doesn't want to. Spend the extra for 89 or 93 and you'll see a huge difference.

I have a 2006 2.0T. $5K seems about right nowadays for a pre-facelift 2nd gen 9-3. They're very persnickety cars in that they don't need a ton of maintenance, but when they do, you need to make sure everything is squared away 100%. That means don't be cheap with oil changes and get non-synthetic oil. One thing I've noticed is how well they have aged. Find one in good condition that was maintained properly, and you'll have an uncucked Swedish friend for years to come!
Also, many of the important bits are still available if something goes wrong, since it's a mechanical cousin of the Caddy CTS.

Yes sir, I've got a few catalogs. Most of the stuff is too expensive or just not needed for me though. I know what you mean on the soft top, the one that came with it was a POS Rampagr frameless one that was shrunk and wouldn't close right ever. I replaced it with a used OEM one off Craigslist.
Tbh when it comes to engine swaps, by the time you change everything to the 4.0 it would have cost about the same to put a Chevy V8 in it. You need motor mounts, exhaust, accessories, fan and shroud, PCM, and possibly a new trans input shaft (not sure when it comes to the NV3550, but the older TJs had different transmissions behind the 6 and 4, with different output shafts).
Ultimately about the only thing that's cheaper about a 4.0 swap is that you don't need a bell housing adapter, since all AMC engines use compatible bell housings. But that's not a big enough savings to justify it. I'd recommend saving for a V8 swap, honestly.
Also, definitely get an OEM style soft top. I can't stress enough how much nicer OEM is than frameless.

I'm not seeing it. Especially since Jeeps are available from the factory with lockers, beefy axles, and 4:1 low range, which I don't believe Defenders are. Plus, while I don't know how it is in Australia, at least in the US the Jeep aftermarket absolutely dwarfs the Rover's, so there's an abundance of cheap upgrades.

Probably, but if you wheel it you can bust a D35 with a 4 cylinder too. Do a Ford Explorer 8.8 swap, you won't regret it. The right width, almost D60 level strength, and comes with disk brakes. I plan to do it.
