I feel as though if another species got the chance to become dominant, and build their little trenches they live in (civilizations) over the course of generations would be able to evolve intelligence which would in turn make them the new humans. Of course it would be more likely for this to happen for a species with a predisposition or reliance on having high intelligence to survive, like humans.
