Most art doesn't represent this very well, as most litterpals actually sit close to the center of litterboxes so that if they are sprayed with shit it stays in the box.
Litterpals can live for a decent amount of time and when they do die, it is usually from infections, not malnutrition. Fluffies with better colors are simply more likely to become successful mothers.
