No, heroin addiction is VERY VERY real. There are levels to it but people very rarely quit heroin. It sounds exaggerated like most anti-drug ads do but really, once you do heroin once you find yourself justifying it in your own head "oh I'll do it once next month" then you end up doing it a week later instead, etc etc. This can continue for months (it continued for a year and a half for me) and it's great then I ended up using all week and BAM. I was addicted. Withdrawals are fucking hell.

And yeah, didn't think of it too much the first few years. I was only experienced with weed, so when my friend came out of the bathroom on heroin it was scary. However after a while it became normalized, I tried snorting it once, did too much, got sick, never did it again.
Some of my friends started out with smoking, one still does and I keep in touch with him sometimes, he actually is a lawyer and nobody knows his secret.
Some of my other (former) friends started shooting. In my experience, here is where thing starts to escalate. Saw them less and less, the few times I had them at my apt thing started go missing etc, eventually I had to move apartments because one of them kept showing up at least once a week in the middle of the night begging for dollar bills, and I got burglarized.
So yeah. MJ was exagereted. Heroin not. Please don't confuse the severity of the two, thats how most addicts started out. Heroin is a whole other ballgame....

simply put opiates work because they are chemically similar to endogenous opiate- like neurotransmitters (endorphine, dynorphin and another one i always forget). as say heroin obviously floods your system your body's reaction is much stronger than it usually is.
the problem is that your body will try to compensate that by reducing its own production. this will result in withdrawl symptoms once you cut off the external source.
