probably around the times of the scientology protests. when that was made highly public the content itself also changed. although it still wasnt nearly as bad as it is now, it was a gradual descent from interesting threads to general hookup and porn threads with no real content.
gore threads werent as common either. even when /b/ raided gaia and attracted a bunch of gaiafags. even that was better than the slow descent into a facebook feed that /b/ is now.

I legitimately started browsing this website in 2006 during summer of my freshman year in high school. Yes, i was underaged but im sure most oldfags were. Things were definitely different. This may sound cliche but it was definitely more random, there was less of the same type of threads, there was actually content being created solely by 4chan, it was a community and people weren't all assholes to each other. This lasted 3 or so years and was a legitimate golden period for /b/, it was a board that wasn't subjected to any topic like /a/ or /sp/ but the same kind of cool funny people browsed and commented and those with talent or ideas actually created good content. It was truely all "for the lulz"
I noticed it start getting really different a few years ago. Theres just too many teens and newage memekids who think they are quirky and 4chan is some special secret club.

/b/ became the condensation of that. There was shit. There was tons of shit. There was a while when it was all gore. But we passed through phases.
You laugh you lose wasn't just youtube videos. Jokes and memes were actually made, and tons were forced.
By 2009 it had become big. Repetitive. Grade 8 kids were rickrolling each other. The ones who watched how I met your mother stepped on the scene. At the end of it, spideyposting came about. Fuck man, it was genius for the time, what a fucking find.
But people had gotten the formula by then. Many had mastered it by the time I joined, which is why I came around the golden age, but too many people knew it by the time I left. I came back in 2013 and have never been sucked back in. There's just not enough creativity. Too much people connecting with each other, too much ranting, too little effort.
We had discussion threads, but realize that the Internet was different then too. Younger. Not every idea had been explored a thousand different ways. You could be exposed to whole new shit every month.
Today, it's every day. Every hour.

I started here summer of 2006, somehow came over after YTMND, in search of some sauce. Stayed for those proto-memes, and continued on for raids, oh the raids were more than a hobby for me. Plus there were some very creative peeps online. There was a CS:S map of habbo hotel and it was the definition of awesome, not because it reflected habbo hotel, but moreso the online culture here. My 4chan activity declined a bit after say 2009-2011 in favor of other chan boards namely 7chan(spider experts). I hated naming off these other boards because hurr sekrit klub durr, but they felt more exclusive and like the older 4chan felt. After 2013 or so I didn't frequent any boards as much except for porn threads, and I check in here to see what's going on every now and then. A lot of the people, tripfags from other boards, have gone to say Facebook groups and post better content there. Like others have said, shitposting is at an all time high and worthwhile, creative threads are at an all time low.

My memories grow fuzzy at this time, the ages that have passed and my slumber keeping me from exact recall, but I remember the war of the tripfags against the forces of the Anonymity.
Chanology had come in at some point, but yet I persisted for I trusted our God-Emperor's wisdom. Cats were still held sacred, and we put folks in jail for hurting kitties, or for disrespecting Caturday.
Then I slumbered some more. When I awoken I found a cesspool of bronies and furfags. I purged what I could, but the imperium of /b/ was collapsing. From my experience, I don't really things have changed that much. There was more grass roots raiding, but most of the so-called cancer was still posted then. Trap threads, YLYL threads, meetup threads, and so on.
