Because Hitler essentially lucked into huge success by hedging bets on enormous longshots. Then winning, and winning, and winning some more. Basically he had a huge streak of winning by showing enormous bluster and playing all facets of his reign very aggressively in a world where politicians were used to playing it cautious. No one wanted to put their ass on the line to stop him. So he gradually bluffed/blustered his way into controlling roughly a quarter of the landmass of earth.
But then the repeated double or nothing bets caught up to him. He was eventually so powerful that he could no longer be ignored, pacified, or placated. The world had to unite against him.... which they did.
But had Hitler quit the blackjack table when he was on top, he would likely still be revered as a God among men and a savior of Europe. A new Constantine.
Had Hitler never went after Russia, he could have easily smashed England and controlled all of Western Europe. Had Germany never declared war on the US after Pearl Harbor, they likely could have stayed out of the battle for the Pacific and it would have just been USA vs Japan.
There's several points where Hitler could have stayed his hand and kept the Empire he had created, or successfully defended it. But he just got too used to casting those double or nothing bets and winning them.
That and Hitler would be 127 if he was still alive which is older than the oldest human on record (125 I think).... but he easily could have lived through the 60s had he won the war....
