A normal conversation consists of a fucking conversation you shut-in. What you just described was an awkward encounter from an anti-social person.
Obviously if the person doesn't want to talk to you, it's going to be a short, dead end conversation but to somebody who's asking you questions and actually interested in talking to you it's pretty damn hard to run out of shit to say.
I absolutely despise my boss but I'm with him for hours every day and there's rarely a moment we're not talking. Anything from weather to sports, politics, fishing, shit we did over the weekend, restaurants we went to, crazy stories of shit we did in the past, women, family life, etc. With another co-worker we talk about TV shows, movies, games, smoking weed and getting drunk what the fuck ever else decides to come up. Another co-worker doesn't really talk much but I listen to him bitch about my boss and other co-worker and what he's gonna make for dinner tonight, whether or not he's going to the bar.
Some people just suck at being social, but once you get them talking they always ease up. Being around other people in silence kind of irks me so I'll usually just start up something small and slowly transition it to "hey have you ever seen/done/gone to (whatever)" and so it turns to that which turns into other topics.
And it's not that I'm that asshole who always has to be talking just to hear my own voice. It's boring as fuck working or hanging out somewhere and everybody is just silent. I go into bars sometimes where there's entire groups of people sitting around barely saying a word, just sipping their drinks and looking at their phones. Like what the fuck are you hanging out with these people for if none of you are going to even acknowledge each other?

The problem of why millenials are so fucked is because of the mentality that there is something wrong with them, and not that there is something wrong with the environment around them.
The behavior that we identify with millenials is not some genetic or timely trait, it has everything to do with how the world around them operates and what it offers to them.
Currently as it stands, education in the U.S. is massively underfunded, advaned education is a scam, and working in any proffessional industry has so many requirements that its just not something to look forward to, much less know how to get into.
Literally most kids don't have a future other than working a desk job or a manual labor job the rest of their life, and those kinds of jobs just don't give you the comfort and security they did 20-30 years ago. In those times, you could work a manual labor job, save up, buy a house. Now, in most cities, there's no way to afford that, you don't get to 'own' anything really.
