They made a lot of great music that has held up really well, but the musical climate of the late 80's and early 90's is essential to Nirvana's success. Nirvana was good, but it wasn't what Kurt Cobain wanted it to be. Kurt Cobain is cool to a stoned 15-20 year old because he did a lot of crazy weird shit, and was an entertaining guy. I developed kind of an obsession with him at one point (right after a drug-induced psychosis, so this wasn't even the weirdest part, but that's a post for another day), but after I've gotten older, and I don't trip balls on cough medicine for weeks on end, I've realized he was really just a whiney little bitch. He only really became an icon because, well shit, look at the guy, I'm not gay and I think he's sexy. He got famous BY selling out, and hated himself for it. He whined about his parents' divorce and stomach pains then blew out his brains at age 27. He really wasn't anything spectacular, he just happened to be a media goldmine at the time. Eminem was pretty much the same thing a decade later, just with way better music, though instead of dying he just became lame.
