These are not the same thing, nor mutually exclusive.
Think of it like this... religions try to 'sell' an idea, and you buy the idea by ascribing the belief. Whether or not the idea is based in reality and truth depends on what the idea is, but generally the idea has to be somewhat contentious otherwise it wouldn't be a religion.
Children don't have the tools to reasonably way complex ideas like that. When you ask a child about something controversial, they don't stop and weigh the decision or the evidence. They just tell you what their parents told them.
Religion is a special thing, because if you can give it to a child at a young age, it has a small chance of sticking to the child before they can go and explore religion on their own.
In a way, teaching a religion is like selling a kid a product before they have the money to spend. You deprive them of the opportunity to genuinely explore religion on their own. Even if they reject the religion later, part of them will still hold some religiosity and they will occasionally wonder if they're wrong and (depending on the religion) may fear judgment.
If you're really casual about religion with your kid, you're fine, but teaching kids fundamentalism and taking them to churches where they're likely to feel ostracized if they do something outside of religious norms... that's cruel.

The only difference between me and an atheist is that I'm willing to acknowledge the possibility (no matter how astronomically small) that there is SOME kind of higher force in the universe. It's not necessarily "god", it's not necessarily a conscious entity, it's not even necessarily in OUR universe or even part of our observable dimensions, but there it's literally impossible to rule out all of these possibilities in a meaningful way that doesn't rely on theories or assumptions.
That's it. I don't necessarily WANT there to be a god or anything like that. I'm just a guy who likes to keep as open a mind as possible and being an atheist is being closed-minded in my opinion.
But because most atheists can't resist a good chance to brag about how enlightened and euphoric they are (another reason I choose to not associate myself with them), they twist that to mean I'm some kind of moron who believes in fairies.
Does everyone agree that whether or not God exists, religion, if done correctly, is beneficial to our society.

We atheists need to do a better job of promoting alternative religions. Groups that promote proper morals and community service and bring people together, just without God involved. This would both benefit everyone and out an end to the religion is essential argument.

That's fine. Nobody said being an agnostic had to have any meaningful effects on your life. A big problem with religion is that people focus too much on it and let them define who they are instead of using it as a tool to discover who they truly want to be. It's just an answer to a question.

The way you describe yourself, you're much more atheist than agnostic. I see agnostics as people that say I don't go to church, but I see the merits of religions X, Y, and Z, and that people have a right to believe in anything or whatever nonsense they say. There is a negative connotation with atheism though due to all the stupid people.

Assumptions like "useful existence" is not really an good argument. Shortly after the big bang there where trillions of supernovae happened. Just to create and disperse heavy atoms into the stars.
Everybody could think about a more "practical" way this universe could be created and run. But the "practical" aspect is only "useful" to prove a super entity, not to disprove its unbelievable stupidity.
