Navy Butterbar here. If you plan on going NSW the best thing you can do is find one and workout with them/have them train you. If you can't do that, find videos and do their workouts. Also, 90% of all military training is mental. Find situations where you have to perform under pressure and complete your goal.

Seriously consider going Army as Infantry or some other combat arms job and trying for the Green Beret. Another civilian here. I was thinking about enlisting after finishing university this year as well. Don't think physical fitness is a problem, 6'4", 220 lbs, 385 bench + 535 deadlift. I didn't want to enlist until I was 100% certain I wanted to and not get cold feet shipping out. Grandfather served in the navy, would like to go into that branch.

My grandfather passed a few years ago unfortunately. He was a smoker since he was 15. But he used to tell me some awesome stories about his time doing construction and shit for the bases before the troops arrived. I remember him saying he was friends with a few frogmen and spoke highly of them, they were upstanding guys. If your grandfather is in his late 70's, might be the Korean War.
Don't take it too hard on yourself though, I definitely didn't spend as much time with him as I could have. His health took a nosedive in a matter of weeks, then I regretted not spending more time with him... But you just can't predict that kind of stuff. Thank you for the kind words though, I hope it helps to know that your great uncle made a big enough impact that generations after him know the division he belonged to - that other servicemen shared his legacy with their kids and grandkids.

He finished before I did, went into the airforce officer commissions school and did well. But he wanted to be airforce.
