This is not what athiests believe. We theorize that there was a point singularity from which all matter sprang, we don't really know what happened before that, but we're still trying to find out. Theology says "god did it" every time it hits a wall, but that doesn't andwer any questions because it leaves the even bigger question of god's origin unanswered. Science is a logical progression of knowledge and discovery, it is the continuous effort to turn the unknown into the known. Religion is an effort to ignore the question entirely.
