I wouldn't ever tell anyone what to do study within philosophy, just read a little of everything and see what you like. I went back and forth, studied Heidegger and Kant then Frege and Wittgenstein, I ended up with a nice background in both "analytic" and "continental" philosophy and finally settled on work in metaphysics
you never know what will interest but the more you've read, the better and I have some good friends who have finished their phds in ethics, best of luck man
>>677342102
I read somewhere that the median income for a lawyer in the US is actually not that special. The highest earning (highrollers like partners n shit) make up a small percentage of all the grads and inflate the average salary a lot. Also, law grads from top colleges, like Ivy League, make ridiculous money when compared to lawyers from other colleges.
Any truth to these claims?
>>677342109

Are they getting paid good with phd in ethics ? And if yes, what profession ? By the way, I am studying Fregge/Russell/Strawson/Donellan at the moment. Kant is fine, but he has a messy way of writing so I'd rather read him just on ethics along with Mill and Hare. I didn't read Wittgenstein yet, but I guess I'll have time for that, same with Heidegger. I kind of like ethics cause it also feels like having a practical side. Metaphyiscs is interesting too, but it just doesn't tick for me.
>>677342109
I'm the one you responded to. Applied ethics is something you see everywhere nowadays and it's probably going to become even more complicated to take decisions related to the morality of an action in the future. You want to say that it's artificial because it doesn't focus on something that exists in nature, morality. Yea, well, if you look at it that way it could be artificial, but studying ethics doesn't mean that you throw away the rest of the philosophy. About the difficulty increase, artificial intelligence being almost the same if not the same as human's, cloning, maybe assisted suicide (even though it exists today too). Those are just the more science fiction looking options (except the assisted suicide), but add to that the normal morality cases like euthanasia, etc. Also ethics applies to all kind of moral judgements, not just one field.

my major is fucking bitches in my Goliath suit.
she'd come over sometimes while her boyfriend was away after school.

once the door would close she'd almost instantly get naked. most times she'd put on her favorite song and start sucking. then she would cry. her tears and makeup would drip down her face onto my dick. its surprising how cold tears are. eventually i finally asked her what was wrong. in between licks she told me that her favorite song was also her bfs favorite song. so even though she loved hearing it and it totally got her pussy wet, it also made her think about the fact that she was cheating on her boyfriend. i dont think i ever came harder down somebodies throat then right after she told me that. she was beautiful. we dont hang out anymore. wanna get lunch?

this was the song:

no it isn't faggot.
business is not a real degree, nobody respects it. especially not 'business men', whatever the fuck that means.
you want to go into 'business', study a real thing as an undergrad and go to business school. a business major is the biggest joke out there,

That's information technology. Actual computer science is mostly applied mathematics and leads to far more interesting careers than middle management.
> graduated with a masters in advanced computer science about ten years ago
> develop the software intelligent conveyor and automated manufacturing robotics
There's not much difference between my work and electrical engineering really, my team works side by side with manufacturing.
The problem with the perception of comp sci is that so many people think it's all code that can be farmed out to India. Lots of it is... but that's not computer science, it's computer programming. There's a fucking world of difference. You master one before you start the other.
>>677347646
It's a shitty degree bud just give up.
IDK if it's already been said, but Philosophy isn't always so low on the list. Take virologists in the research field, for example. They make one hell of a salary, and they almost all need a Ph.D in Philosophy. Why that is, I'm not entirely sure, but that's how it is. I mean, obviously they need the requisite science and medical courses, but the Ph.D is in Philosophy.

>Liberal arts degree
>>677347383
Yes, but then you just move the problem from "Is it moral to do this once we clone this ?" to "Is it moral to clone this ?" It still finds application, just in different levels. We can see that robots are becoming better and better and technology is also advancing (drones / flying cars), I wouldn't be surprised to see a robot acting like a human being, then it would be more complicated cause the concept of "person" would interfere with this "artificial being" which wouldn't be artificial anymore since it meets a person's characteristics. Of course that the power some may gain from using such technology is great, but there's not a monopoly in this area. Japs have better technology than USA, at least in robots from what we can see, so USA can't abuse this new technology. Things can get difficult if the artificial intelligence becomes way too similar to human nature. There are probably more problems which I don't account for, but I'm not a PhD graduate to tell you more, I'm just in 2nd year.

I am working on a PhD in philosophy, and I think you might be confused. Technically all PhD's are 'doctor of philosophy'. So if you get a phd in physics you get a 'doctor of philosophy in physics'.
I will be getting a 'doctor of philosophy in philosophy'.
but you are right that it is a good major. philosophy is right near the top major in amount of money one earns 10 years out of graduation.

See it as this - You'll be making him money, which makes sense why you're mad and call it a low tier work. Without business people we wouldn't have the future we have today.

yeah i know harman's stuff on heidegger.
i mean people who work on heidegger don't have a high opinion of it, to say the least.
doesn't mean it isn't interesting.
and i know it's big in some parts of the humanities, social sciences. i know it is big in architecture. (deleuze stuff)
but for the most part philosophers have a low opinion of it.
not saying it is entirely justified, just reporting on the state of things.

I just cannot agree with you here. Clones exist and are still human life, and robots are by definition not. I cant see a Blade Runner situation occuring where robots expect to be humans.
The issue wont come from new beings and ethical questions (can you have a robot lover if it is based on a 12 year old? can I kill this robot? etc) but from their masters. The point of philosophy is knowing where power lies and how to subvert it.
>>677349856
what the balls
in britain you specialise from the age of 14. i haven't done art since i was 14, i haven't done anything that wasn't a science since i was 16.
Took Fine Arts but didn't get to finish it. A lot of pretentious "artists". I loved and hated it. Loved it because our professors were cool. Hated because pretentious fucks got in because they had money.

yeah but you kinda have to chose your A levels based on what you wanna do at uni, like if you do chemistry law and sports science then you're probably missing a lot of prerequisites.
>>677350336
ok so my degree is like, you choose your course to start with, and then you get your first year with the rest of life sciences learning the basics, then in second year you specialise a bit more and maybe get a couple of electives, and then third year you get a project and you specialise even more
it seems like in america you can just pick and choose courses from any degree at random, and whichever one you did the most in is your "major"?
>>677349856
that pretty fucking smart.
