When I was in high school, Vegeta was my hero. I really really respected his perseverance and looked up to his example. Because I loved his character so much, I deluded myself into thinking that we were similar people, and I was proud of myself.
But as my life continued and I went on through college, I realized that I was never truly driven like Vegeta was. I relied on my natural abilities to sail through an easy life, only trying hard when absolutely necessary and taking very little risk. Obviously, this troubled me because it seemed that my actions were more like a Goku-type character that relied on natural talent for success. I respected these kinds of people much less of course, and thus lost respect for myself. I was disappointed in me.
Despite my self-doubts, I was able to continue under the delusion that I was like Vegeta because of the demanding job I found myself in after college. Because my job was so demanding, I told myself I was still being like Vegeta by working hard. For a time, I felt good about my life.
The only thing was, though my job was difficult, it wasn't truly an act of dedication. I eventually left it and began to coast through life again, just like I did through college. My heart just wasn't in it. It wasn't in anything. I then realized that I was nothing like Vegeta, and the fact that I had deluded myself into thinking I was made me disgusted with myself.
The first time I watched the Vegeta/Goku fight and Vegeta lost, I cried. I admit it. I cried the second time too because watching his dreams die was just too terrible. But eventually I got over it because, hey, it's just an anime. (And DBZ was starting to suck too) But after I got older, and realized I was nothing like the character I idolized as a teen, Vegeta's defeat took on a new meaning. Now, when I watch the fight, I cry because it reminds me of how I used to think I could live up to Vegeta's example, and live my life truly driven like him.
