From what I understand there reason behind the mens high contracts is, that the US mens team has to give contracts competitive to other teams that the males might leave and play for.
US womens soccer team is pretty much the only team there is offering anywhere close to what they are getting paid right now.
Its about competition to keep the male players.

Just because you are payed a lot doesn't necessarily mean that you're smart. You see a trend of female athletes complaining about this all over the world, but the truth is no one gives a crap about women's sports, not even women themselves. I mean think about it, they make up 50% of the population, and if they were to just show some sort of interest in women's soccer then the women playing soccer would probably make the same amount of money. But as it is right now, men watch men play, and women primarily watch men play aswell, because they want to watch a decent level of sports, yet they're somehow surprised they don't get millions upon millions when the stands are fucking empty? Male athletes also have bargaining leverage when another team is willing to pay them more to bring them over to there side, since the US team already pays more then any other team they really have no leverage until the sport as a whole becomes more profitable. I'm not surprised if this is the case...when the women's team plays a friendly, the stadium is far from full...when the men's team does, it often is (although admittedly depending on the opponent, many of the fans are for the opposing side). still, men's team fills a 20,000 seat stadium with U.S. supporters much more regularly than women's team.

The women's "MLS" doesn't get a big turnout like the men's MLS, and even then, it's still a very young league trying to complete with the BPL and even the Mexifags down the border. There's a reason why we don't hear about Alex Morgan or other USWNT players until cups or friendlies. I like them, don't get me wrong (Megan Klingenberg is bad) but it's reality. If they starting getting more of a rep in their domestic league, then yes, they should be payed higher.

You also have to take into fact that some USMNT players play over seas, like Geoff Cameron (Stoke), Aron Johanson (Werder Bremen), Fabian Johnson (Gladbach), and until the summer Tim Howard (Everton but will move back to the MLS after years in England)
Even Dempsey and Donovan spent time in England. (Fulham and Everton respectively)
All of these guys are 1st team players and are payed like it.
It seems this is irrelevant.
They do what they want to do and have everything they need to survive. Nothing else appears relevant.
