Diablo 3. gameplay is very very close to D2, takes a few to get used to the damage shit and character set-up. but it's just as good. those saying otherwise, haven't gave the game a fair shake.

Passive tree is convoluted as fuck and they redo it every few weeks cause it's so shit with artificial depth and complexity, plus it's just your basic min maxing math instead of anything remotely interesting.
Skill gem system is stupid as fuck and is loot locked in a ridiculous amount of ways. Not only do you have to get the rare skill gems you want but you also have to have the right loot with the right amount of slots. It's fucking retarded, all stars have to align to get any decent build or have fun trying to trade 1000 hours or play 10k hours to get anything.

Grim Dawn is pretty excellent. If you want a similar experience but with a more ancient Rome/Greek feel, check out Titan Quest (get the gold version because it includes the expansion)

There is no game similar to Diablo 2, the closest you will find to "similar" would be path of exile I can agree with that, but honestly if you're gonna play path of exile you may as well just keep playing Diablo 2 cause its better.
Titan Quest and Grim Dawn are great games and also are hack and slash like Diablo 2's genre. Diablo 3 is also hack and slash, but its very "meta" to do exactly one thing as each class is has no skill leveling system which is kind of boring. Torchlight and Torchlight 2 is almost an exact copy of Diablo and Diablo 2 aside from having worse classes to play obviously there are mods to make them similar but thats a lot of work to just play diablo 2.
If you can't tell I've pretty much settled for playing Diablo 2 in my free time and the other games with friends when they want me to. Also my opinion is very low of Diablo 3 for lack of customization options, but it does do what its trying to extremely well which is streamline each character and what everyone is doing.

To continue with my post, Grim Dawn is the newest of anything you'll find. I do believe it is single player offline or at least it has the option I've never not had internet while playing it though so I can't be positive. Titan Quest is a older version of Grim Dawn set in a different time period using the exact same system. I think you can find some fun in Grim Dawn or really any of the listed ARPGs Torchlight, Path of Exile, Titanquest, Grim Dawn, etc you just have to find one that fits your tastes. Mine is and probably will forever be Diablo 2 just because old time customizations being viable in every hard piece of content was a huge thing for me. If you like hack & slash, try Path of Exile. Play it for a few hours, see where you end up.

POE is everything I hoped d3 was going to be, and wasn't/ POE is _not_ overly complicated for no reason. they've been upgrading and tweaking and honing and balancing this thing *constantly* ever since before the Closed Beta I was a part of, was opened to the public (there was no act 2-4 back then)
POE requires thoughtful play and is COMPLEX but not COMPLICATED (learn the difference)

Path of Exile all the way. There is a learning curve, but if you find a guide or just sick with it a while it is very rewarding.
