I spent 9 months in San Francisco County Jail awaiting sentencing, I was in one of the Gladiator tanks, number 2 (non-Mexicano gang affiliated, ie. not Sureño, Norteño, La Eme et al) with 28 bunks and about 12 or 13 guys on the floor with mattresses.
The deal is you get 1 piece of each item of clothing, let's hope you like orange.
So 1 sweatshirt, 1 pair of pants, 1 T-shirt, I pair of boxers etc. Tuesdays and Fridays are exchange days. Anyone caught with more than 1 of anything is subject to a write-up meaning they can take your visits, commissary or whatever they feel like doing that day.
I slipped one of the workers a Milky Way (what we call a Mars Bar smile) for an extra decent T-shirt so I could wash one and still have one to wear.
Everyday there would be a tank inspection called a walkthrough by the cops in the morning (In the US all the jail/prison screws are called cops), so I asked Greg where the best place was to hide my extra T-shirt. He showed me a good spot right under the 3 toilets/sinks. So every morning before the inspection I would roll my T-shirt up and place it there.
All working well.
Now Greg gets the job as one of the tank cleaners and does a great job, he takes pride in doing it well.

I stayed clean through all of that. At that time, I had, had enough. I was in and out of jail for while prior but that was the first time that I was actually looking at hard time. I guess you could say I had hit rock bottom at that point. I had gotten off other charges on technicalities and shit but there was no way out this last time. I now use and drink every now and then but in a very different manner. I don't know what I attribute it to, but I have been able to have a clear head about drugs and drinking ever since.

Did 1 year. Never saw or even heard of anyone getting raped. In straya, when u first go in, they ask if you want to go into special protection (slang term is the "bone yard"). That was about 1 month after a well liked inmate had attempted suicide, so I may have been stroppy. And yeah, the worst part is getting used to it, the depression and hopelessness and almost surreal boredom becomes a way of life, you get used to it. I was terrified when I got out, I didn't even know if I could live normally again, get used to all the space, pay rent, get groceries, look after myself. It was the worst fucking year of my life. There are charities that run mens hostel's like The Salvation Army and St Vincent De Paul's, as well as landlords that run cheap high density housing that pick you up as you get out. They had a print out the office they gave me when I left that had a list of places that would take me in. In a way, release really wasnt release, you were still in an institution, there were even screws. Eventually you sort of learn to live again, get a rental and move on. So we sorta did get a bit of help.

If I go to jail in Denver, I can get my methadone. Shitty thing is, my warrant is for Jefferson county, the neighboring county. They do not supply methadone to patients, they are forced to withdrawal off of it only giving advil and stomach pills. If the doctor finds it appropriate, (not likely unless you're a pretty girl), you are allowed one clonidine patch, which only lasts 5 days at best. Expect a month for methadone withdrawal with paws lasting up to a year or more. Clonidine will barely help the sweats and hot flashes if you're lucky. This is truely my depiction of hell. Prison while not addicted to opiates seems like heaven once you know what it COULD be like, if you happened to be dependant on medication you're legally prescribed that causes intense withdrawal syndrome and it's considered okay to take that away from you.
