What is a meme? Sometimes I just can't help but wonder if life, as we currently can understand it, is just a series of memes, from the beginning history until the last human dies or becomes something much more. It may be easy to fall into the trap of believing that "memes" are modern day cancer, spread pathologically throughout the internet, however the deeper meaning behind the word meme, a viral, simple idea repeated within a community, has been an essential evolutionary trait to humankind, in my opinion. Today many memes are in the form of texts or captioned images, but memes were so around 100 years ago, in the form of common sayings known as idioms. Long before that even, I am sure there are many mannerisms that have caught on and become widespread possibly becausd they were humorous, possibly because they served to pass down wisdom and knowledge down generations. If one ponders the topic, all religions are just memes repeated from father to son, tribe to tribe, in some sort of journey for peace or internal salvation, whether at the expense of others not. Are memes the key to happiness? Going further, one could even see language itself, as a meme. A beautiful, expansive and ever changing m e m e. Memes, much like language, can enhance and create paths for communication between people who have nothing in common except for prior knowledge of the meme. I believe that this is what sets humans apart from mere beasts. It is our ability to create and propagate "memes" that has turned us into the global superpower that we have become over the last ten thousand years. I look forward to the memes we will create together as a species, and can only hope they will continue to bring positive value into our lives.
