Also if anyone has any recommendations for similar animes that would be great. From what I've read Stein's Gate and Psycho Pass are similar. Ergo Proxy was cool but the story was a bit meh.

steins;gate is a light novel with time travel/butterfly effect plot, psycho-pass an action thriller.

this guy actually has a point, while the theme of madoka magica is completely different (and the pacing multiple times better) the idea of a little girl protagonist who, discovering the true meaning of a mysterious happening, suffers a personal crisis is actually very comparable.
personally i think that madoka was far better executed than the lain anime - which setting you prefer will depend on your taste though
