So then if they cremated them all, all that ash (hydrogen and carbon specifically, of which the human body has in utter abundance) should've caused fairly detrimental acid rains and damaged (at the very least) the more delicate aspects of the local flora. That didn't happen either.

This was the more likely fate of the inmates. It's recorded in several recovered Reichstag documents that most camp prisoners were used for labor, mainly to assist the war effort. And I have zero doubt some fucked up shit happened in those camps--no one was totally innocent in that War.
There's almost no documentation (that I can find) of this, only testimonials, but apparently the Soviets generally decided to execute camp inmates rather than support them. The Soviet party line had no real love for Jews, but more than that, the Soviet's shaky supply lines and strained resources didn't allow for them to feed/clothe all the inmates.

In my opinion the german camps stand apart because they went further that anyone else in using the prisoners' work and belongings, while at the same time attempted to hide the gigantic system from the public. It really was successful until the Allied forces started to find the camps.
