First of all, I think you would need to avoid the use of a costume.
Yes, you need a mask and some kind of protection, but If you really want to help, making yourself "outstanding" it's a really bad idea.

At best a person could try to be like the Punisher. Great hand to hand skill. Prior experience at war. Strong stomach and will to survive. Amazing marksman to the point of being almost supernatural. Completely unflappable, won't fall to bribes or corruption. Driven to stop criminals because he hates them. The only sense of justice he truly has, is that he makes damn sure not to harm any innocents ever. Otherwise he's like Judge Dredd. If you are guilty of a violent or super bad sexual crime, you are punished, period.
IRL, no one could fully avoid collateral damage. There is no possible way for a stray bullet or explosion to miss every single innocent in the world around the fighting you'd be involved in. And that, eventually, would make you the bad guy. Eventually you would be accepting losses in order to move on and continue doing what you are obsessed with, and cops would have to snipe your ass.
Unless you mean a guy in fake body armor punching or using sticks on people. Or "gadgets". In which case, gtfo with that shit. It can't be done by one man, ever. It would ruin your body almost right away, and one or two skull cracks and you're out. Any accident or overwhelming moment and you are fucking dead. At least with a gun and it's ilk you can be long range and fight dirty from hidden vantages. But again, you'd end up hurting an innocent.
Look at people in fiction like Rorschach, kick ass, or nolan's version of batman. You get ruined quickly.
