Former inmate here, OP. Let me give you some advice:
The very first time they let you into genpop, find the biggest, meanest guy around, walk straight up to him and knock him the fuck out. You might get beat on a little if he has friends around, and you'll definitely end up in the hole for a few days, but trust me it's worth it. If anyone asks why you did it just reply in a low growling tone, "He knows what the fuck he did".

Quite a few acquaintances of mine are now in rehab for the 20th time or dead. The fucked up part is that I would do the same amount of dope/pills/coke/whatever and just quit cold turkey while they struggle through withdrawal and hit the methadone clinic every morning.

It depends on the prison as much as anything. Some are better managed, more relaxed than others.
Some prisons are corrupt as fuck where a caste of prisoners are systematically turned into sex slaves and extreme violence is common.
