Depends what your field is. Any math or pure science I'd say your best bet is NYU, same goes for law or medicine. Computer science and engineering you're better off at Washington.

That is kind of true. Depends a lot on your area of study. I know an econ PhD candidate at UC Berkeley who splits his time between research and constantly traveling for conferences and interviews. His goal is to work at the UN or IMF. He goes to Berkeley because it has one of the top Econ programs in the world, with many global leaders coming out of this program.

Physics at NYU. Astronomy at University of Washington
I think I want to do theoretical cosmology, and have heard NYU is really good for that. But then I heard the Astronomy program at UW is actually higher tier than NYU and one of the best.
I'd rather not do simulations as Theory, and definitely do not want to do pure observational shit.

That's true. And NYU made a point about that when I was flown there for their open house. They say they talk to Princeton a lot, which has the top theoretical physics.
I will say that I am going into Academia. So I will probably do a Post-Doc. But y'know, 5 to 6 years of Ph.D can change my mind, and if I am east coast, I will have PLENTY of opportunities.
