Apple is a company that sells basically one product, the Mac. It designs the hardware so it can just be strong enough to efficiently run the current OS. This means that when the newest software comes out, your speed will go to complete shit.
Example: OSX is great, but it has a bad rep for being slow, because everyone who updated to OSX can't fucking run it and now have to she'll out a new 1000+ dollars to get a better machine.
Compared to a Linux box, which can update anytime and if, somehow your gear isn't strong enough to run what you want, you can replace small individual parts (CPU, hard drive, ram) for a much lower price.

Well, no, everything you just said was pretty much wrong. The biggest down side to a mac is the lack of upgradeability for the vast majority of their hardware.
The only hardware that's really behind the times are the video cards, which unless you're a gamer or doing serious video editing doesn't matter, and the 5400 RPM hard drives which make no goddamned sense to offer as an option in this day and age.
The problem that most of 'I can keep upgrading forevah' people don't get is that most people don't upgrade their machines, they barely even know how they work, let alone the difference between an HD and RAM. As well as the fact that Apple sells machines with very small/thin form factors, and this comes with limitations on what you can do with hardware.
If you're looking to get a laptop, a Mac is a great choice, with the possible exception of if you need a video card.

I switched to Macbook since 4 years ago. I'll give it to you straight:
Macbooks' specs will always be lower than other laptops at the same price. Is gaming important to you? If you own a gaming pc and need a laptop for browsing/simplethings, get a Macbook.
The touchpad is better than any other laptops there is and the feel and comfort caring it around as well.
Does the feel actually matter? Surprisingly, yes. I know a lot of people who are skeptical about this, but once people get used to the Macbook's feel, it's hard to go back.
Last thing, newer versions of Macbooks cannot be upgraded. Any model after mid 2012 (I believe?) cannot have it's parts switched out for newer ones. Of course you can only switch out the harddrive and the ram, but at least it's something. You're gunna be stuck with that CPU for years, and that's the biggest problems I have for Macbooks.
Once you get a Macbook, you're gunna HAVE to use it for years. There is no upgrading and you're going to have to sell it to buy a new one. The price will already depreciate quite a bit once you use it. The only thing that's going for the Macbook is it's feel and ease of use about it's body design. Plus, there aren't many laptops out there that can compete with the look of Macbook's screens.

Well I think this is the point. It works really well now. Which is why it's so frequently bought by those who can afford it. However, Apple has almost no continuing support for released products.
The newest version of the app is the only one you can find in the apple store. They push for every update even if it's no large scale resting. And eventually the hardware cannot match the new software and there is no alternative to buying a new machine.
So, if you want it to last, or modify it to your liking, get a PC. If you want it to be the best computer for this year only, get a Mac.

This is kind of a non-point because they're generally decent hardware-wise for several years afterwards. Plus, laptops basically are non-upgradable hardware-wise anyways in most cases save for RAM and HDD.
The idea with macs seems to be that you keep them nice as fuck and then resell them at a strategic point in their lifecycle if you can. Pay $2 grand for one, use it for two or three years, resell for $1.5k. Price isn't too terribly bad at that point.
I wouldn't honestly have gotten this had I not needed one for iOS development (I realize its not 100% necessary but it's pretty fucking useful to not have to use Hackintosh bullshit). Now that I have it though it's pretty nice.
