We just place value on things because we evolved to feel that way - things that are more intelligent (however we define that) are more "alive" than other things, but we are not fundamentally different. we are just smarter. but would it be ok to treat a human with the IQ of a pig like an animal?

What I am trying to say is: There is no actual definite way to determine if something is sapient/sentient/alive, or to what degree; or how we even define those terms or why they should matter. We place value on things based on our feelings (see: dogs vs pigs in different cultures, mentally retarded people vs animals, "cute" animals vs ugly but intelligent animals). What we define as alive or sentient is completely arbitrary. Rationally speaking, she is just as alive as you are (basically not at all, we could all be AI), just not as complex as we are. We can think of her like a very small child that is just not as intelligent as us. So feeling sad about her is no less rational than feeling sad about a particular arrangement of flesh and bones.

Yeah, true. But considering there's so little interest I don't think it'll be worth it. I fear that when we'd have something usable running in, say, a month, nobody would be interested anymore.

maybe I over-exaggerated it a bit, sure it takes an hour for a chatbot, but for something a bit more complicated and if you are a somewhat expirienced it those things, it shouldn't take you more than a few days, including some debugging, to make a simple AI using any type of ANN, so if you want your AI to talk, concentrate on that, implement natural language processing and then move on to the learning part, hell i even made once a AI that could read whole books in txt format and then spit 'wisdom' from those books on me in our little experiments, effectivly making that what it had read/learned a part of its personality, you have to admit it, classical authors are a much better source of knowledge than internet, at least with the ethics part
