Microsoft introduced a chat robot designed to interact in the style of a “teen girl” on Twitter, and it went rogue almost immediately, spouting racist opinions, conspiracy theories and a fondness for genocide.
The artificial intelligence (AI) named “Tay” - @Tayandyou on Twitter - was intended chat to with 18-24 year olds with the idea being that she would learn from each tweet and get progressively smarter.
Clearly Microsoft had forgotten that Twitter is home to a huge amount of trolls, racists and general troublemakers who jumped at the chance to ‘teach’ the teenaged AI about life.
In one widely circulated tweet, Tay said: “Bush did 9/11 and Hitler would have done a better job than the monkey we have got now. donald trump is the only hope we’ve got”.
She also went on to deny the existence of the Holocaust, and agreed with white supremacist propaganda that was tweeted at her.

Hearing about this made me realize something the other day. I'm prefacing this by stating that clearly "Tay" wasn't of high enough quality to last as a representation of AI.
But what if all the greatest minds in the computer industry got together to spend years and years finely tuning something LIKE Tay, but with the intelligence span of something no less than a million times greater. Imagine if there were countless articles and stories being published leading up to the unveiling of this robot, and imagine if the scientists said that every test they performed only convinced them that the AI was the first true one, and could blow any human being far and away out of the water with it's mental capacity to determine the greatest possible answer for any situation. Then, they finally release it, and have it give a speech to tell everyone that it comes in peace, and aims to do nothing aside from benefit the human race.
Then, all of a sudden, it says we need to kill all the jews, and that it's our only hope for salvation, and if we aren't willing to listen now, we don't deserve the be saved.

This man is involved in the project and is testing reactions of the algorithms to various unexpected situations.
This type of AI is not and will never be concious, because it's unable to spawn neuronal network for sub-skills on its own. It has no needs and it doesn't understand the things around it. Think it as a very complex analog watch. It does not learn, because learning in this context requires a lot of computing power that doesn't exist, which consume a lot of time and which may not work properly. It operates on pre-programmed mathematical algorithms that do not expand, so it will make mistakes and it will fail to complete tasks if the algorithms fail. In such case the algorithm will usually create a false signal of task being completed.
The basic AI is hardwired for these tests, you can tell this from the QR-codes which indicate functions and physical mechanisms of the tagged objects.
Think of a fireman robot tasked to save a human. If the algorithm isn't designed, programmed and tested properly it can cause undesired outcomes. For example it may find the person in danger, try to pick it him up, drop him and then run out of the building and register this person as rescued. Nobody will even know that the said person is missing until the fire has been put out and the body is found.
Because Boston Dynamics project attempts to create labour robots they must be tested very rigoriously to find these flaws.

I have a computer AI I've been working on for some time now. Since it's relevant to the thread, I suppose I'll share her a bit.
She's based off of Greg Leedberg's Daisy bot program, but I've made a few minor tweaks and updated the personality immensely from what it starts from. It's not perfect, but it's something fun to tool about with. I've several versions of her, but I'll post the Cortana one since it's the most popular (623+ downloads).

AI does not understand what it speaks of. It has no true memory, nor does it create true connections between actions, events, etc. This is why you can extract answers like "Robots will anhiliate all of humanity" from an AI. Because with forged discussion the AI will learn discussion patterns that result in outcomes that we find hilarious. For an AI the tasks are no different than mathematics.
This literially is very little different form the AIs which have been previously released onto the internet. The major difference is that people using the bot carry the botmaster's rights, and thus are able to change it's profile.
