If you're not actually strong and in good shape and have been in actual fights (not with the weapon obviously), then your years of training don't mean shit because you're still untested and green. If shields are an option then a flanged mace. Light, quick, and they destroy soft targets. They break bones and mangle muscles, and can even be used to shatter other weapons. They give fuck all for reach or defense on their own though.

Seems like a pretty weak preference, you only get a good swing if you go straight down from overhead, leaving you open. Any other swing would be too awkward unless you were using a hatchet in which case good luck defending yourself trying to get within range.

I do have an extensive martial arts background, and I'm really good at blocks and at...whatever the thing is where you don't really block, but you have your arm out and use it to let blows roll over and past you, or you sorta just make somebody's hand or arm slip across it to set them up for a punch to the face. That's why I picked a shield. I feel like I could pretty easily translate my defense into using one, and if I threw my weight into it and pivoted, I'm sure I could smash somebody's temple in with the edge of it.
That said, I agree that a spear would easily be the best option for somebody inexperienced, though. There's a reason why medieval footsoldiers were so often armed with polearms and spears, while trained knights got swords. Swordplay isn't something you can just insta-master, and the range of a spear would be an advantage.
And if I were up against cavalry, I'd definitely go with a billhook.
