My state respects all citizens' rights to open carry so that's not an issue, I do have a Concealed Deadly Weapon License. Since I carry concealed I will also carry into stores with the little "no guns allowed" stickers. Why? If there's no metal detector then I'm going about my business. Only places where I stash the gun in the car are post office and school. Criminals don't respect the signs so it would be foolish for me to.
Guns aren't registered here so it's legal but not registered, although I did get it from an FFL so they may have a file with my name on it in their own paperwork.

Nah, I live in a safe part of a fairly safe city. I don't engage in risky behavior and am more observant than average. I don't actually ever really think I'll need to use my gun for anything other than practice.
However, a few people every day die or are severely injured in a location that was "safe" where "nothing like this ever happens." So a small gun carried discreetly is a very reasonable insurance policy in the hope that it is never needed.
Plus I have a family so I'm the protector. The police refuse to escort us everywhere so it's up to us. So basically we're just taking advantage of the personal freedoms protected by our founding documents.

I think a lot of folks, especially from other countries, don't understand the mind-set. Since gun owners aren't as outspoken, they get drowned out by all the people making penis jokes instead. So they grow up thinking the government is in charge of making them feel safe and that no one actually needs a gun. Since statistics show that most of them won't ever be violently attacked, they feel like people who take their own security seriously are paranoid or compensating as those are the arguments they hear parroted.

They could also be acting on other motivations that you could never know about, with the intent to directly harm you. Other than freedom, one of the main reasons I don't like the limits and restrictions is because of the false sense of security they give. In the USA there is always a way to get a gun, even for those violent felons who are "prohibited." Most crime guns are either stolen or bought by a friend (so called "straw purchase") and those avenues will ALWAYS be available here. There was a police officer shot last year by a gun that had been stolen from another police officer several years before! So I would like to lower the barriers to firearm ownership because then the good guys aren't being criminalized, and there are a lot more good people than those who would commit violence with a weapon!

That's very true. There have been a few studies done over the last 20 years attempting to put a number on how many defensive gun uses (DGU's) happen every year. The lowest study came in at like 55,000, while the largest was over 2 million a year I believe. I figure the truth is somewhere in the middle, which means that every year guns save many more lives than they take in the US. When you consider that out of our gun death's more than half are suicides, that leaves around 10-15k murdered with guns a year. That means it's likely that guns are used in successful defensive situations at a rate 5-10 times greater than they're used to take a life.
The NRA publishes DGUs all the time, as do websites like The Truth About Guns. If you look for them you'll find them.
