OK, but Talking Heads is new wave. Their best songs are mostly those that sound the least like rock, and that album is a good example.
It needs to be listened to with good sound quality, so that you can clearly hear all of the instruments, and you need to listen carefully and more than once. Try listening with headphones, alone, in the couch with no computer.
As for why they're significant, you have to put yourself in the musical environment of the late 1970s. The 60s and 70s had been all about pop, and 70s pop is all glitter and glamour and all sounds the same, all commercial formulaic bullshit. Then punk came and introduced new esthetics into music, trying to destroy this stagnant commercialism. New wave is the result of taking this momentum and adding education and finesse. It is an exploratory genre. Talking Heads' albums all sound different, trying to come up with something new.
In the end, some of the new esthetics that were developed within new wave became adopted by pop music in the 80s, and have thus influenced all the music that has come since then. And Talking Heads were one of the most important bands of that movement.

I'd definitely say it was THEIR best album. I had tickets to go see them two different times. Once, it blizzarded and the interstate was closed and I could go and the second time my appendix ruptured.

77 is good too, everything they made up to and including Little Creatures is really good. But to me, 77 and More Songs are nice and interesting to listen to once in a while, but Remain In Light makes my head spin. Born Under Punches is one of the best songs I've ever heard, and The Great Curve has that part towards the end where they let it repeat just so many times that you can take the time to listen to each vocal track separately, and just marvel at the composition.
77 has Tentative Decisions and First Week/Last Week, but they don't bring me goosebumps the way RIL does. They're just nice pleasant little fun songs.
More Songs About Buildings and Food has The Good Thing, Warning Sign, Found a Job, Artists Only, I'm Not in Love, and Stay Hungry. The latter is fantastic. The others are nice interesting songs, but I find it hard to lose myself in them. But I'd say MSABAF > 77. But they're both too... I don't know, plain-sounding.
Then there's Fear of Music, which is also really good but a bit too strange to be musically enjoyable the way RIL is, in my opinion.
Then there's Speaking in Tongues which is simply brilliant. There are no weak songs on it. And the cool eeriness of the music gives me the shivers sometimes.
And then there's Little Creatures, which is of course more of a pop album, but it's still a really good one. Road to Nowhere is one of my favourite Talking Heads songs.
But all of these albums are good, and I listen to them all from time to time.
Anyway, it's just nice to find someone who likes Talking Heads. I think I'm the only one of my friends who listens to them, people don't know what they're missing. :)

Okay okay, maybe that's not God tier, but I can at least sit through literally any of their albums and actually enjoy it. Music that's hard to swallow can be an intersting experience. Especially stoned.

He he, had to listen to it again now when you mentioned it. It's good, it's a very good album. I'm more of a studio music sort of guy, so I left out the live albums.. but it's fascinating how Talking Heads adapt their music to live performance, so they sound good both in the studio and live, but the songs are really different.
I like how Life During Wartime just fades out in the middle of a verse in the studio version, they couldn't really do that live.
This ain't no party, this ain't no disco, this ain't no fooling around. I've thought about getting myself a T-shirt with those lines.
