Well, all I named have been by setting, most have a fare bit of character progression in them, accept Foundation, it was written to be an anti-space opera. The social/political trends set up do the work, and moat of the characters' actions aren't even needed. One of the early short stories is about this, and the main character in the second half of novels could have been literally anybody. Asimov got tired of larger than life heroes, so he did this

Well, typically I'd imagine with books like that there would be a group and a common goal. Not really a main character and a few select companions overcoming some great feat.
I like the idea of that though, I've been annoying at the whole "plot convenience important character" set up. Where they're basically the last hope in the universe and they're overly talented. I understand that.

Uplift is kinda weird as far as characters go, and theme for that matter. Book one is like a Who Dun It IN SPACE, two is more of a space opera, three is a rebellion/revolution, and four through six are almost like a high fantasy trilogy. The world building is also top notch
