Use your turn signal and don't ride in other people's blind spots.
signal, shoulder check. when you are approaching a green light think of a "point of no return spot". That will be the point in which you will have to keep going if it turns yellow, or if you're before that spot you will stop at the yellow instead. Look at the wheels of parked cars and you'll be able to get a good idea of which way they're going. When driving in multiple lanes try not to box yourself in (having cars to your sides a front), if somebody rear ends you, you'll have nowhere to go.

A few weeks ago, my son dumped his girlfriend while she was driving. And he did this while she was driving him home with 4 miles to go. He did not really think that through very well. Her normal driving was nothing to brag about anyway, but he said she went 70 on a county road (limit would be 35 if anyone bothered to put a sign up). Replying to self because I just remembered a couple of other good points. Driving while you are tired is a terrible idea. Also, look before you go through a stop light - even if you have the green. If a log truck hits you, you can make fun of them for running a red light all you want but you will still be fucked up.
Don't drive too fast approaching traffic lights. Might get caught in an awkward spot where you're far away enough that you'll need to brake if they change but going fast enough that you'll have to brake heavily.
So if you know you're approaching them, it's alright to slow down a little - especially if you can see they've been on green for a while.

Basically the best thing is to assume everyone on the road is a blind retard so give them plenty of space and warning.
Oh and get a good feel for the size of your vehicle. Have someone outside the car tell you your distance from things in various positions, eg if you're going to park in a tight spot you need to know you won't scrape the car next to you. Likewise check how close you really at the front and back compared to how close you think you are.
And watch out for pedestrians and people on (motor)bikes. Fuckers never look before crossing and if you're in any doubt about the situation slow down and hover your foot over the brake. It's better to have the impatient cunt behind you blow their horn than you ram into some stupid kid or dog who ran across the road without looking.

I had an old Rover 214i, pic related (but mine didn't have the luxury of a sunroof), and the poor bastard couldn't get above 50mph without wobbling. The back seat was LITERALLY mouldy and every night the windows would fog up because of the amount of damp in the seats.
It was the car version of an old pair of shoes. It stunk, nobody wanted to get in, it looked like shit but holy fuck was it comfortable.
Basically my point was that it was such a shit car that my insurance was dirst cheap. Still above £100/month, but nowhere near as pricey as some of my mates' insurances.

Intersections are extremely dangerous and you're naive if you don't think they are.
I live in the Chicago area, and I have seen countless car accidents happen at intersections. People just blow through intersections, or try to catch the green light and end up hitting somebody who is trying to cross early. Sometimes people are distracted and just go on a red light for no reason.

OP if you are the first car holding at the line for red in a cross. Always have a foot on the break until it's yellow. If the guy behind you rear ends you hard enough, you can be pushed into the middle of the intersection and be hit by multiply cars in the on going traffic. Don't ever think there are times cops don't see you. They will one time or another. Always have spare oil and other fluids, your car manual, change your oil regularly, always check your oil at least weekly.ALWAYS HAVE INSURANCE. I got caught once and paid out the ass since I live in Illinois. It was a 385 ticket since I provided proof of insurance at the court date. If I hadn't, it wouldve been an 800 dollar fine. Instructors often tell you to take curves on slow speed and in second gear, actually fuck them and do it in 3 and on higher. It feels way better and if you look at the physics you actually have more traction with the road.

If you can afford the gas the bigger vehicle you can get the better. I.e. Suburban, Big Truck, Lifted truck, H2, hell even something like a Lincoln or Caddy that is just a big car. Yes it will be harder to drive/park, but when you have an accident with another one of these vehicles, you'll more than likely not die or be severely injured. Newer cars are meant to crumple so they absorb some of the energy for you, but at the end of the day, you're going to do better being hit by a Fiesta going 40 than a 3500 diesel doing 20.
