A psych ward stay can be potentially useful. Get you on the right track with meds, and get outpatient care setup.
Be cooperative, and try to getthe most out of it that you can.

Well, when I was at the University of Washington Medical Center's psych ward, all the patients who wanted their cell phones were free to use them.
Perhaps an exception, rather than the rule, but it shows that at least SOME psych wards let you use your cell phone.

What symptoms OP? I've recently recovered (sort of) from being a schizo.
Psych wards do vary quite a bit. A lot depends on the staff. They can be real bitchy, and refuse you things just for the hell of it, or a power trip or whatever. Makes it kind of fucked to be there.
The University of Washington ward was very cool, though. Due in large part to it being a teaching hospital, I think. There are students watching everything, and the staff is much more accountable. All in all, a very decent place, with very capable doctors and nurses, as well as the rest of the staff.

I saw one guy get bumped out the next day after he had his shoulder x-ray'd. He needed surgery and wasn't insured.
I'm on Medicare and they milked me good. Got billed for meds I didn't get, Dr visits I didn't have.
I filed a complaint and learned that they only review your records and to get them changed you gotta go thru the Court, which I couldn't pay for.

That's seriously fucked -- getting charged for stuff you didn't receive. The charges for stuff you DO receive are bad enough. Astronomical fees for every little thing. You couldn't possibly pay more for a pill than to have a nurse give it to you in the hospital.

A young girl, maybe 18 or 19, was admitted to a psych ward when I was there. She was REALLY in a bad way. Totally freaking out. The next day they found out her insurance wouldn't pay, and they kicked her out. She was crying really intense tears as they escorted her out the door. It was borderline criminal. Very hard to watch.

I spent 9 days on a 96 hour hold.It took me 8 to finally get to the Dr who could release me and she did immediately the next day.

Psych wards lose money. Hard to believe with the crazy amounts they charge for every little thing, but I guess insurance is so fucked that they get paid very little of what they bill.
As a result, hospitals keep reducing the number of beds they have available.
I went to the ER a couple of years ago. Was suicidal, and they quickly saw that. Had me in 2 point restraints, and waiting around forever to be helped. After 6 hours, they said, "No beds anywhere -- here or any other hospital in the county. Sorry about that. Sign here please."
Then they kicked me to the curb.
