So I just bought an old house with this old type of knob and tube wiring in it. I'm not really worried about it for everyday things like lights and appliances, because the previous tenant made use of these things just fine. My question is: could this s a problem when it comes to gaming? I have a 360, an XB1, and a PC with a 650W power supply. These should be okay, right?
>>674954060
the powersupply of your pc doesn't mattter nigg
git gud and fix the wiring
>...
>>674954060
Best to replace all in one go
>>674954060
Your lack of a ground and circuit break protection (arc-fault breakers and GFCI breakers) will be a risk to all electronics.
>>674954060
What country is this in?
>>674954060
>PC with a 650W power supply
Wut?
Your PC also nukes your food?
>>674954060
Best to ask /diy/, /sci/, or /g/
Yeah change it.
It just isn't safe.
knob and tube wiring is not grounded, so your systems will run fine, but has a less shock protection
>>674955491
Leave.
>>674955797
also, most insurance companies balk at providing house insurance for knob and tube.
In theory, the system is fine, but insulation is often brittle. And because this is /b/, you're a faggot
>>674954060
The only upside is that your cables are well ventilated. But what matters is fuse size and wire dimensions, if fire is your concern.
Lots of houses built in early 1900s has this. My old house did. Fried out a free TVs after time. No real regulation or safety. See about removing and replacing up to code. I don't recommend do it yourself units you're sure if your electronic knowledge. I did some minor relieving but didn't fuck with fuse box.
>>674955877
That was an unnecessarily hurtful thing to say
>>674954060
I think those are just grounders. You should be looking at your breaker box and see the wattage on your fuses.
>>674956538
Edit: few TVs. Damn Swype.
>>674956803
For the room you're using your pc or whatever. They should be marked
>>674955343
romania
>>674956803
wattage doesn't matter
it's just the current / appareant power
The electric should behave the same but since you don't have a ground that could present a problem for your electronics getting fried. You might be able to run a new circuit and ground it independently then just leave everything else alone
>>674957939
It matters, you megatwat. At a constant voltage, so in your house, higher power means higher current.
Not that I really know what an appareant is, mind you.
>>674958377
Fuses are marked with Amps not watts
>>674958557
There is a formula for that and calculators on line
>>674958377
>>674958810
> At a constant voltage, higher power means higher current
higher apparant power means higher current ;)
>>674958810
I=P/V
>>674958810
You don't need a calculator. The formula is P=U*I, where P is your power in watts, I your current in amps, and U your voltage in, well, volts.
>>674958970
apparent* my technical english is potato'd
>>674958999
for DC only
>>674958970
BUT WHAT THE FUCK IS AN APPARANT FUCKING FRENCHIE
>>674954060
plug your vibrator in there too and make sure, fag.
>>674959315
kek
>>674959171
Still works on AC. Big difference between ACand DC is current is your constant in DC and voltage is constant AC. Ohms law applies to both systems there are a lot of differences in the two systems but ohms law applies to both
>>674960002
it doesn't m8
>>674960002
nope, it is just a linear approximation to DC and AC ~ only in permanent regime, plus for AC it is no longer resistance but impedance which is a parallel but entirely different thing
OP short answer here getting away from the tech bullshit. If you're concerned run a new 15 amp circuit and ground it independently past your main panel ground and neutral become the same on the grid that's why your service rag only has 3 wires. So just run new circuit to computer area with a ground and hook neutral and ground both into neutral bar in your panel. And then your new circuit should be grounded. This won't work in a sub panel has to be main panel.
>>674961260
>hook neutral and ground both into neutral bar in your panel
how to ruin your ground
>>674961260
You can tell they're experts when they talk about getting away from the tech bullshit.
>>674961251
This what they teach in the field you use ohms law regardless if DC or AC and I understand what you mean because formula for resistance is different in AC and DC (DC r+r+r=rt) (AC rx-1+rx-1=ansX-1=rt) hard to right formulas on 4chan but you get what I'm saying. As far as laying out circuits on a house we just take 15x120=1800 watts x .8 = 1440 watts (we only fill to 80%) so for general use to be on the safe side we keep circuits to 10 to 12 hits. I know when you get into engineering there are a lot more factors but you guys are making it harder on OP than you need to
>>674962037
Actual electrician. You engineers are only confusing him
>>674962686
nigga nobody hooks up ground to neutral in a home installation
>>674954060
If it can handle a washer, dryer, and refrigerator, it can handle some pansy ass gaming systems
>>674963140
Are you fucking retarded at the panel yes you do that's why services rags only have three wires. Two hots and a neutral. On sub panels they need to be separated but on main panels they go back to the neutral bar. Have you ever wired service
>>674963719
do you even lift m8
>>674963719
neutral hooked to ground at transfo from power company nigg
>>674961260
it will work in a sub panel if you separate the ground and neutral.
>>674961572
you don't know what your talking about
>>674954060
just use a surge protector, but buy a three prong recepticle and make a west virginia neutral by wrapping a wire around the ground and neutral
>>674954060
Main service neutral and ground live on same post. Sub panel neutral and ground seperated. If you're lazy, install a gfi receptacle where you are worried about utilization devices. Trace your circuits back to panel to see breaker size. You most likely only have a couple... psu takes 5 amps at max load. Check out items like fridge and disposal, try and seperate your high use items. For your health
>>674964407
Maybe where you live. But where I'm from for residential single phase off the transformer there are three wires 2 hots and a neutral. The equipment grounds only come into to play at the panel. On the grid the neutral and ground are the same thing
>>674965203
Ya but there isn't a ground in his house already because it's knob and tube. His best option is the main panel
>>674965284
>single phase
>2 hots
wut
and why would you hook neutral to ground, that'll corrode your ground
>>674965254
Thank you this is what I've been trying to say
>>674965554
Three phase A B C. And it sounds fucked up but single phase has two phases A B
>>674965554
What do you guys do in your area. Because where I'm from. Neutrals and grounds have to return to the same place on the main panel
>>674955491
Really REALLY cunt
That's how your gunna play this game fudisumsikofdumshid
>>674965985
old systems can have 2 phases with lower voltage
new installations either have 1P + N or 3P + N
ground is either a rod in the ground or loop under the house but is never connected to neutral
>>674965554
Does your utility company provide a separate ground or something because ours doesn't. Neutrals and grounds both return to the the utility companies neutral
>>674954060
The wiring is really not the problem. My house still has some of that, I've replaced most of it though. Your biggest issue is if the outlets have a ground and if the fuse box has been converted. Your insurance may be higher if you have knob and tube wiring, so there's some incentive to replace it. I've replaced mine piecemeal as I've remodeled parts of the house.
>>674954060
Fix the wiring.
How did this house pass inspection?
>>674965497
for all intensive purposes neutral and ground are the same thing. you would need them seperated if he had arcfault breakers, or they would just trip.
>>674965554
single phase has two hots, corrosion is caused by oxidation which is only a problem with alluminum wire
>>674966607
ground isnt provided here
every house has their own ground
Just go buy some ground wire, go buy some 3 prong outlets. shut off electric. Run ground through existing holes. (you can use old wire to pull new through.. but don't lose it in the wall, or you will have to fish it out. -- tie something to old wires first in outlet hole before using them to run ground wires up. Wire new outlets, attach ground wire to something grounded. -- Metal waterpipe within a couple feet of where it goes outside works, or can hook it up properly at the panel, or to a ground spike outside. (can buy those at the hardware store too.) Just getting a GFI outlet will not do the trick.. surge protectors will need a ground..
Before you do all this.. check to see if your metal outlet box is grounded. If it is, someone already ran a ground somewhere in the wall and attached it via conduit or wire to the box, in that case just wire the new outlet ground wire to the screw for a ground on the outlet box and problem solved.
>>674954060
Why did you even buy that?
>>674966589
Ok it's different where I'm from we bond meter to ground bar and run water pipe ground from main panel but at the main neutral and grounds both return to neutral bar
So this guy I know used to have house with this kind of wiring in. Used to, it burned to the ground with one of his friends inside.
>>674966964
That's what I'm sayin is they're the same thing that's why they return to the same point at the main panel
>>674966589
ground rods and ufer grounds aka footer grounds are directly connected to the neutral in the pannel
>>674967355
Not to meter to ground bar I meant meter to ground rod my bad
>>674966996
>you can use old wire to pull new through
No, you can't. Knob & tube wires are secured at the knob. The 2 pieces of porcelain have a nail through their middle. The wire is strung between the 2 pieces and the entire thing is nailed to a stud.
>>674967559
and what im saying is use the neutral at the recepticle as the ground to take you back to the panel
>>674967681
Some jurisdiction make make us have continuous ground from rod to meter to panel but most only require rod to meter
>>674967078
too many kids asking stupid questions in this thread.
>>674968056
Asking why anyone would buy a house that has this kind of wiring in it is stupid now?
>>674967989
tell the inspector you don't need to ground your meter its bull shit
>>674967988
You can cheat plug in testers by doing that but with expensive computer equipment I'd run an independant ground to be safe. Or Atleast put in a GFCI and use a surge strip
>>674968583
It's common practice where I'm from. Trying to argue with a inspector over that is only gonna him off then he'll fuck with you over other shit>>674968812
>>674969196
Ignore second tag my bad
