German cuisine in general is delicious fresh bread with all sorts of meat, like steak or schnitzel and fresh, seasoned vegetables. Mashed potatoes are supposed to be seasoned a bit (some butter, maybe garlic or chives, skin can be left in as well) and topped with a gravy of choice. If done right (which is easy to do) it will have 2 or 3 easily notable flavors often being described as salty and savory. It can be topped with things like corn or peas for more sweetness and variety. Its good enough as a main dish with plenty of distinct varieties in flavors. But for white people that wasn't good enough. The awesomeness that is seasoned mashed potatoes and your choice of gravy (if any at all) is just a motherfucking side.
