I am also doing a PHD in zoology. Some of my work involves fish.

Is there any way I can get two beta fish or something similar along these lines in a single tank (small tank, nothing that will blow a student's wallet)? I would like to care for a fish but I don't want to have a single fish, I don't want them to feel lonely.
Can fish feel loneliness?

if you put two bettas in a small tank they will kill each other. this is why they are called siamese fighting fish. so no, you cannot do that.
just get some neon tetras or something.
