/b/, I believe I am about to be caught for cheating on an exam

/b/, I believe I am about to be caught for cheating on an exam that I just took. Why did I cheat? Because I'm a lazy fuck and I wanted to artificially increase my grade by making it seem like I know more than I do, duh.
Anyway, evidently the university's online web portal is capable of detecting if the text submitted was imported from somewhere else (hard to describe, I wasn't plagiarizing but the text was coming from a link associated with Google). So after I submitted my exam I see a mile long of html code preceding each of my answers (in other words, fuck my life). The professor will know right away something is not right.
I need advice. If you were a stupid fuck like me, do you think it's more wise to face the professor on my own and come clean if prompted, almost guaranteeing she will prescribe an F for the course and followup with the Academic Integrity Board (a mix of current students and professors). OR, should I withdraw from the course tonight and hope that further action will not be taken because I would have already withdrawn. Is it possible for action to be taken AFTER I withdraw?

Tell me how fucked I am /b/..
>>
Hahahahaaa yes you are fucked
>>
Sounds like your in a tight spot. When I'm in a tight spot I find a repeat thrusting motion to be the most effective at bringing about a resolution.

That's a tough spot to quit on, the class would've been a compleatle waste of time then. Like you never took it in the first place.

I was in a similar situation a few years back.

Honesty is the best route. Denying things only further destroys your credibility. If you can, try to play on her emotions. Tell her you had a bad breakup recently, family issues that were taking up a lot of your time, and most of all, say that you regret it. It was a horrible mistake and you wish you could take it back, etc etc.

Friends with a few professors, for a first offence most will fail you for the assignment and/or course without further disciplinary action if you come clean, especially unprompted.

worst case, you could get kicked out of school permanently.

depending on the school's policy, and if this is your first infraction, you could just fail the class (best case).

how sure are you that you'll get caught? how bad did you cheat? is this just a case of failing to cite a source properly?

>not knowing how to copy-paste

its impossible for a web application to know if you copy pasted something, the only thing they can do is search for the shit you typed back to google, and if you were stupid enough to actually write it word for word you deserve failing.

HTML code doesnt fucking appear out of nowhere and it might as well mean something went wrong with the page rather than meaning they caught you, browsers are built to process that shit, not just show it as plain text.

It's a business class but taught in another language (in this case French).

The extent of the cheating was making use of a translator (in this case Google Translate) to translate 4 out of 30 questions on the exam. Only the first four questions on the exam are flagged with the mile long hidden Google code which wasn't visible until after submission. During the exam I became suspicious that something was going on and I ceased using the translator for the remaining 26 questions. Obviously using it once is a major infraction, using it 4 times...well, I would think her to be stupid if she believed I only stopped after 4 questions. I don't expect her to trust me.

inb4 fagt had to cheat on french exam
>>
Do you have a screenshot of some of this code?
>>
>>674498110
Withdraw from the fucking class. You don't want the fact that you're a dirty little kike on record.

Also, prof may give you the option to withdraw before she reports you. Buddy had the same thing happen to him and that's what his prof did.

No, this is a horrible idea.
You're essentially admitting you broke the rules, don't be stupid.

>"Do you know how fast you were going in this 25mph zone?"
>"I don't know, 27."

You're ADMITTING you broke the rules. Do NOT admit you broke the rules under ANY circumstances UNLESS you are 100% sure you're already caught or there's enough evidence already there.

YOU. ARE. NOT. SURE. YET.

Do NOT admit to anything, YOU FUCKTARD!
>>
>>674504608

There is no clear cut solution. It depends on the authority figure you're dealing with and the situation.

Honesty is likely to be the better policy in an academic setting.
>>
>>674498110
Contact the professor tomorrow and make up some excuse about how you forgot to take the test and beg to let take it in the next day or two. Beg and beg, make it seem like the only thing you care about is making up for the missing test. If she say's you already took it, act all confused, say you didn't and ask when you can take it. Your only hope

>Yes sir, 27 mph.
>You know that's two miles above the speed limit, son?
>Yes sir, I'm sorry, I'm eager to get home after a long day.
>Well all your paperwork checks out. Don't let it happen again.

ALTERNATIVELY
>Well here's a ticket.
>day of court
>If your infraction was 5 mph or less over, leave
>bye
>>
God damn I miss trying to pull the wool over my professor's eyes. Good times.

Now I get a hardon whenever I can con someone out of twenty bucks or a few cigarettes. Get a rush from that shit.
>>
>>674498110
Okay, listen to me, anon.
Play dumb. Own what you did, and act like it was normal. You weren't plagiarizing, because you knew the answer. It sounds like one of those casual open-book tests.

In the end, when confronted, just be like "Oh. Well, can I just make up the test, then? I didn't think it was against the rules." OR "That sounds fair. So that answer will be considered incorrect?" If the teacher is understanding, they might at least count that answer as incorrect and grade you that way.

>Apologize
>Say something like "so that answer will be considered wrong?" This can take away some ammunition and allow you to guide her to a different punishment.
>Carry through with this momentum
>Phrases like "That sounds fair" and "I'm an idiot, I had no idea."
>Stay in class, grade is lowered because of "misunderstanding."
>>
>>674505216

No, you're a fucking idiot.
If you're going over the speed limit you can deny it and 99% of all cops won't even fight you further than that unless you were REALLY fucking booking it. Unless you're a danger, they're not gonna take you to court, they're not going to show up, and it's a giant hassle.

YOU DON'T FUCKING GROVEL UNTIL YOU HAVE TO!

Do NOT admit your wrongdoing until someone KNOWS there was a wrongdoing, you retards.
>>
>>674505174
and remember when she asks why it says you've taken the test that not your job to explain. I don't know is the right answer

Mix these two together, actually. "Honesty" anon made a really good point.

Although, see if you can admit to thinking it was pushing the boundaries, not that you thought it was outright cheating. Play to her emotions while playing the honest mistake card, suggest more tame punishments in the form of a question, admitting that SOME punishment is fair. Then maybe casually ask if there's anything you can do to make it up, like that's normal. Because all of it is pretty normal.

You'll be fine.

Honesty goes a long way man. It shows you're able to own up to your mistakes and that you honestly care about doing the right thing and earning your grades. Building an image of good character is unbelievably helpful in countless ways.
>>
>>674502759
>i co-own google, what do you mean why are you taking a business course ill do whatever i want
>>
>>674506049
This. OP sounds like he was just doing a business course, so unless teach is grading you on your understanding of the french language, just say you weren't sure how to write some words or forgot what they were in french. You only did in 4, right? You just had trouble with them, memorize and make excuses for which words you "fucked up".
>>
>>674506488
I would only withdraw if SHE suggest you withdraw.
Doing so on your own accord WOULD make it seem like you're trying to evade consequences.
If confronted about the situation, explain what you did, your reasoning behind it.
Explain that you believe it was a foolish mistake, and you knew that from the beginning.
Tell her that you don't want this to leave a scar on your record,
and ask if there's any course of action you could take to clear the air.

She will likely suggest that you withdraw.
Yes, you technically fail the course.
However you walk away with your integrity,
and it wont come back to haunt you in your future.
>>
Why were you to lazy to retype the answers and at least try to change the wording... Or if it s numerical why would you straight up copy paste that?
..could drop the class now and play that into emotional appeal if they come after you ("I panicked when I didn't know the answers....I knew it was wrong and dropped the course ")
>>
>>674506049
Both. And explicit instructions was given to not use external aides.
My dilemma is if I should be upfront with her before she brings it to my attention, or wait and see if anything comes of it.
Despite her instructions not to use external aides, I think I could admit guilt and downplay the extent of my use and just convey that I used it to translate words in the sentence I did not know, or to add accents over particular letters, because in the browser where the exam was administered it was not possible to add accents over letters, like it is in Translate and Micro Word.
>>
>>674507884
Sounds reasoning. This will likely be my course of action.
>>
>>674508119
I would think the last one through a lot. It sounds good, but if there are any obvious holes that she could see through after you tell her this all confidently, you will just be sitting there thinking "oh shit, why didn't I think of that"
>>
>>674508036
Yes and no. At times I copied an entire sentence fragment. Other times I only needed to copy a single word after the Translator had added the correct accents.

Sorry for not including multiple replies in one response. Seeing some of these a little late.
>>
>>674508119
Sounds like you've more or less got a plan,OP. Stick with this and I think the worst that will happen is that you'll fail the course. I would suggest thinking through it some more, trying to poke holes in your own story in order to refine it, but overall, this seems like the best course of action.
>>
>>674508546
I still don't understand what you did to cause the code to show up...

Where did you get caught?
1. You translated the question
2. You wrote your answer in English and then translated it completely (or part of it)
3. You copied and then pasted into your test
4. You submitted the question

If the program is just reading that you've copied and pasted from Gtrans, why don't you just paste the text onto a notepad file (getting rid of the source) and then paste the text into your Exam assignment?
>>
>>674508119
Definitely be upfront anon. Waiting for her to bring it up will make her think you tried to just pass it off.
>>
Usually you just fail the test if this is your first time in that class for getting caught cheating.

If that was a mid-term examine you could be properly fuckulated nad end up having to drop the class, but I guess it could be worse.

I wouldn't mention it until the professor brings it up. If you admit to cheating then you are still as guilty of cheating as not admitting to cheating and getting caught.
>>
>>674508976
In hindsight this is sound advice and something worth trying. Having not possessed the foresight to foresee that this code would have popped up, I don't have this luxury anymore.
It seems that when material is copied directly from Gtrans and then pasted into the particular university portal that my school uses, it was able to detect that it had been pasted and from where it originated. This, at least, is my best guestament.
>>
>>674509025

Thanks, citizen, for admitting your guilt, you are under arrest.

Thank you for your honesty.
>>
>>674508313
>>674508119

Also, to add to my previous post >>674507884

Coming clean about it before confronted could be beneficial too.
It would show integrity. That it was totally out of character for you to do that,
and that you didn't feel right about it.

She may even allow you to retake the test, you never know.
Sometimes lying will get you out of immediate problems.
But more often then not they come back to bite you in the ass.

I've found taking the high ground is always the best course of action,
even if the consequences of that are similar or no different than the low ground.
Again, at least you walk away with your integrity.
And there's always the chance they will respect you for that and cut you some slack.
>>
>>674508546
I forgive you, bit don't let it happen again
>>
send her random pics of guns and knives saying everyone gets an A or else
>>
>>674509567
Regardless of where the error was, I don't think its a big deal. Ignore my notepad idea.

Honestly, just relax man. I know my school portal is glitchy and sometimes will sperg out. If it was a simple C+P error, then it could be the portal was just messing up.

I highly doubt that the code was purposefully there. If there was suspicion of cheating, the school would have implemented some form of letting you know/prevent you from continuing the assignment. Just chill, and wait to see what the professor says.

What exactly are the grading criteria for the exam? If it didn't specify you weren't allowed to use translators, then what's the problem?
>>
OP here.
I am going to message her tonight. She is in France right now, so my hope is that she will have some wine and cheese in her when she reads my e-mails.
I'm going to admit to being dishonest when taking the exam, that this is the hardest e-mail I have ever had to write, and what would she liked to do/like me to do about the matter.
I'll probably begin typing the e-mail in 10 mins. Will post final copy.
Yay or nay to sending the e-mail tonight?
>>
>>674510654
Don't, that's a bad move and you could be digging yourself into a hole you can avoid. Wait to see the response. That's a bad move. I hate to agree with that other poster, but don't admit guilt. Play off like you didn't know and just continue the assignment. Wait to see what happens and if anything happens. If you get away with it, then you have nothing to worry about.
