9mm is weakest powered, cheapest per bullet, and smallest (highest capacity in a pistol). .40 is in the middle, and .45 is the largest, most powerful, and most expensive.

.40 cal was designed to have the stopping power of a .45 but have the same velocity of a 9mm, IMO 40cal is the way to go, I have both 45 and 40 however my cc is the 40 I use my 45 as a home defense since it does not have nearly the amount of piercing power as the 40 I.e velocity on woch Pierce through walls etc.. I'll take the 45 with me while I hunt as well. Either way getting hit with a 45 hollow point and 40 hollow point still cause extreme tissue damage, the 45 spread is about 2 inches when it expand, the 40 cal is about 1 1/2 inches fully expanded. Both of which will be a 1 bullet dropper. Getting hit with a 40 HP will stop someone in there tracks.

Check local gun clubs for NRA classes, most offer them every few months. Lots of gun shops will also be able to help direct you to a good place to learn. Learn before buying though.
